Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Begins to FallWithin forty-eight hours, the illusion of Carmine Russo’s coup evaporated like morning mist under a blowtorch.

The underworld of Chicago learned a terrifying lesson: you do not bury a god without making sure he is actually dead.
Liam didn't waste time on public executions or chaotic street shootouts. He operated with the cold, surgical precision of a grandmaster playing a game of chess against a toddler. By midday following his resurrection, his loyal enforcers—men who had hidden in safehouses waiting for a sign from their true boss—had systematically seized control of every dock, warehouse, and money-laundering front that Carmine had tried to redirect.
In the high-security subterranean basement of the Falcone estate—a windowless concrete vault lined with steel racks and humming computer servers—Luna Hartley sat at a massive multi-monitor workstation.
She wore a sharp, professional black blazer over a simple blouse, her hair tied back in a sleek ponytail. Gone was the timid, barefoot maid who trembled in the shadows. In her place sat the woman who had helped Thomas uncover the greatest financial conspiracy in the history of the Chicago syndicate.
Liam stood behind her chair, his hands resting casually in his trouser pockets, watching the lines of encrypted code and wire-transfer logs scrolling across the screens.
“He was sloppy,” Luna said, her voice steady and clinical as her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. “Carmine thought he had total control, so he didn't bother scrubbing his digital footprints. Look here—every single port bribe, every kickback from the drug cartels, and every cent siphoned from the legitimate construction fronts was funneled through a shell company called Apex Horizon LLC. And the primary beneficiary listed on the master account is... Lady Elena Falcone.”
Liam watched the screen without a flicker of emotion. He had known Elena was ambitious, but seeing the cold numbers—tens of millions of dollars stolen while sharing his bed—felt like watching a stranger’s medical chart.
“And Thomas’s work?” Liam asked quietly.
Luna paused for a fraction of a second, her jaw tightening. She brought up a separate, heavily encrypted folder labeled THOM_AUDIT_FINAL.
“Tommy found out about Apex Horizon three months ago,” Luna said, her voice dropping an octave with suppressed grief. “He didn't just find the wire transfers; he found the physical paper trail linking Carmine and Elena to the cartel assassinations of rival bosses. He was putting together a dossier to hand directly to you. That’s why they killed him. They staged the highway crash using a remote-override truck to smash his sedan into a concrete divider.”
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the bunker.
Liam leaned down, placing a warm, heavy hand on Luna’s shoulder. It was a gesture of solidarity that he had never extended to anyone in his entire life.
“Your fiancé was a braver accountant than half my capos,” Liam said softly. “His work won’t go unavenged, Luna. Every single person who had a hand in his death—and mine—will pay in full.”
Before Luna could reply, the heavy steel door of the basement bunker clicked and swung open.
Sal's former second-in-command, a scarred veteran named Rocco, stepped inside, dragging a man by the collar.
It was Carmine Russo.
Gone was the confident, smug underboss of the breakfast table. Carmine’s Brioni suit was stained with mud and dried blood, his hair was messy, and his hands were zip-tied tightly behind his back. He stumbled forward, gasping for breath, before being kicked hard behind the knees, forcing him to crash onto the concrete floor at Liam’s feet.
Rocco stepped back, standing at attention by the door.
Liam slowly walked around Luna’s desk, crouching down until he was eye-level with the groveling traitor.
“C-Cassian—I mean, Liam—please!” Carmine blubbered, spitting blood from a split lip. “It was a misunderstanding! Elena manipulated me! She promised me the syndicate, she said you were holding us back—it was all her idea—!”
Liam reached out, grabbed Carmine by his silk tie, and yanked his face upward, forcing him to look straight into his eyes.
“Elena is locked in the master suite upstairs, waiting her turn, Carmine,” Liam said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “She blamed you just as fast as you’re blaming her. You two deserve each other.”
Liam stood up, brushing off his knees as if he had just touched something filthy.
“You spent ten years standing by my side, drinking my scotch, smoking my cigars, and eating at my table,” Liam said, turning his back to Carmine. “And you repaid that loyalty by murdering my accountant, poisoning my wine, and trying to steal my home.”
Liam signaled to Rocco with a flick of his wrist.
“Take him to the dry docks in South Chicago,” Liam ordered flatly. “Tie him to the concrete anchor blocks we’re sinking for the new shipping containers. Let’s see if his offshore accounts can buy him a breath of air when the tide comes in.”
As Carmine began to shriek, thrashing wildly against the guards as they dragged him out of the vault, Liam turned back to the monitors.
“And Luna?” Liam asked, looking down at the young woman.

“Yes, Mr. Falcone?” she asked, looking up.
“Print out the final financial dossier on Apex Horizon. It’s time we invited the federal prosecutor’s office for a very private, very educational meeting.”
