Chapter 3 - THE CONSPIRACY AT GREENVIEWBy the following week, the storm surrounding Richard Adams had reached a fever pitch.

Ryan had been released from the hospital and was now thriving in the penthouse nursery alongside Michael. Both boys were gaining weight, their cheeks filling out, their pale skin returning to a healthy pink. Isabella had begun seeing a private tutor hired by Richard, showing an astounding aptitude for mathematics and reading despite missing months of school.

But downstairs, in the real world of corporate Chicago, a war was brewing.

In the mahogany-paneled conference room of Adams Development Headquarters on LaSalle Street, Richard sat at the head of a twenty-foot glass table. Arrayed against him were twelve members of his board of directors, flanked by Arthur Vance—Victoria’s father and the founder of Vance Capital Group.

Arthur Vance was a ruthless, sixty-year-old billionaire with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a reputation for crushing anyone who stood in his way.

"Richard," Arthur began, sliding a thick legal document across the table. "This is an emergency petition for your removal as Chief Executive Officer on the grounds of fiduciary negligence and mental incompetence."

Richard didn't even pick up the paper. "On what grounds, Arthur?"

"You have halted work on the Greenview project for ten consecutive days," Arthur barked, leaning forward. "You have incurred four million dollars in contract penalties. You canceled the eviction sweeps on Parcel 4B, allowing illegal squatters to re-occupy the property. And to top it all off, you’ve taken in three wards of the state without board approval, creating a PR nightmare that has driven our stock down twelve percent!"

"The Greenview site is a crime scene, Arthur," Richard said calmly, leaning back in his leather chair.

The room went dead silent.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly. "What are you talking about?"

Richard gestured to the door. It opened, and Marcus Cole—a high-powered private investigator and former federal agent hired by Richard—walked into the room carrying a black leather briefcase.

Cole set his laptop on the table, connected it to the room's giant digital projector, and pressed play.

An audio recording filled the room. The voice was unmistakably that of Donald Vance, Arthur’s nephew and the chief field supervisor for Vance Capital's demolition division.

“I don't care if there are people still inside Parcel 4B,” Donald’s voice crackled through the speakers. “Turn off the heating pipes! Shut off the main water valve! Cut the power lines at midnight! If we freeze them out, they’ll leave on their own and we won't have to wait thirty days for the legal eviction warrants! We need that ground cleared by the 15th!”

The board members gasped, looking at each other in shock.

"That... that recording is fabricated!" Arthur stammered, his face turning pale.

"It gets better, Arthur," Richard said coldly. "Three weeks ago, my team conducted a forensic audit on the maintenance logs for Parcel 4B. Constance Stevens—the mother of the three children currently living in my home—was a legal tenant whose rent was paid six months in advance through a municipal housing grant."

Richard stood up, placing his hands on the table and leaning over Arthur.

"Your company illegally cut the heat to her apartment during a twenty-degree winter storm," Richard hissed. "Her newborn twin boys developed severe hypothermia. When she went down to the basement to confront your thugs, your crew deliberately collapsed a section of drywall to intimidate her, causing a structural accident that crushed her chest. She died three days later in a charity ward from internal injuries and pneumonia."

Arthur Vance began to sweat, his arrogant demeanor crumbling. "You can't prove that..."

"I have the hospital records, the coroner's report, three eyewitness statements from former tenants, and the bank transfers showing your nephew paid off the building manager to falsify the vacancy reports," Richard countered. "You didn't just clear land, Arthur. You murdered Constance Stevens to rush a fifty-million-dollar tax loophole."

The board members stood up in uproar, pointing fingers at Arthur Vance.

"Arthur, is this true?!" one senior board member yelled. "You've implicated this entire firm in a criminal homicide investigation!"

"I am filing a formal criminal complaint with the State’s Attorney’s office in one hour," Richard announced, his voice ringing through the room like a hammer on an anvil. "And as for the Greenview project... I am buying out Vance Capital's fifty percent equity share at fire-sale valuation. If you refuse, Arthur, I will release these audio files directly to the press and the federal prosecutors before the markets close today."

Arthur Vance slumped back into his chair, looking aged by twenty years. He looked up at Richard with burning hatred. "You think you've won, Adams? You think you can take those kids and play happy family while destroying my legacy?"

"I don't think, Arthur," Richard whispered, pulling his coat on. "I know."
