Chapter 2 - The Estate on Elmwood RidgeThe Caruso estate was a fortress disguised as a manor. Set behind ten-foot wrought-iron gates on the highest ridge overlooking the city, it featured rolling lawns, manicured boxwood hedges, and a security apparatus that rivaled a small sovereign nation. Motion sensors, thermal cameras, and armed patrols monitored the perimeter twenty-four hours a day.

When the armored transport van pulled up to the rear service entrance that evening, the household staff gathered with a mixture of dread and curiosity.
Vincenzo stepped out first, slamming the heavy door behind him. He looked exhausted. Transporting a traumatized, fighting-ring mastiff mix had required a custom crate, heavy chains, and a signed liability waiver that cost more than a luxury sedan.
"Get the portable ramp," Vincenzo commanded the head of his security detail, a scarred veteran named Marcus. "And keep everyone clear of the tailgate. The beast is unpredictable."
Before Marcus could touch the latch, the side door of the van swung open. Arya was already standing there, her small fingers resting casually on the edge of the metal threshold.
Inside the crate, two golden amber eyes gleamed in the dim light. There was a deep, resonant growl—not of anger, but of raw, untamed power—that vibrated through the floorboards of the vehicle. Marcus raised a heavy leather catch-pole, his muscles bunching.
"Hold your fire, Marcus," Arya’s voice didn't make a sound, but the sharp, commanding gesture of her hand cut through the air with absolute authority. She had inherited more than just her father’s dark eyes; she had inherited a quiet, terrifying command that made grown men stop in their tracks.
Arya reached inside the crate without the catch-pole, without a leash, and without hesitation.
The security guards gasped, half-expecting a bloodbath. Vincenzo took a half-step forward, his hand hovering near his holster, his breath catching in his throat. If the dog lunged, he would have to put a bullet through its skull right here in the driveway, and he knew—with a sinking, sickening dread—that it would break something irreparable inside his daughter all over again.
Titan’s ears flattened. A low, warning rumble rolled from his chest.
Arya didn't pull back. She spoke—not out loud, but with her posture, her steady breathing, and the unblinking calm of her gaze. She understood what it felt like to be trapped in a cage of your own trauma, surrounded by people who were terrified of what was locked inside your head.
Slowly, massively, the dog shifted its weight. A scarred, heavy paw emerged from the darkness of the crate, placing itself deliberately on the cold concrete. Then came the second paw. Titan stepped out into the crisp winter air, shaking his massive frame until his loose skin rippled.
He towered over Arya, looking more like a prehistoric bear than a domestic dog. But instead of charging, the beast lowered his heavy head and gently nudged his wet nose against the palm of Arya’s hand.
A collective exhale rippled through the gathered guards.
"Well," Marcus muttered, lowering his catch-pole in utter bewilderment. "I'll be damned. The dog’s got better manners than half the capos in the syndicate."
Vincenzo exhaled slowly, wiping a hand across his face. He watched his daughter scratch the thick, scarred hide behind the dog’s torn ear. For three years, Vincenzo had tried to fill the silence in his home with bodyguards, tutors, private chefs, and silent surveillance monitors. He had tried to build an impenetrable wall around his daughter to keep the violence of his world out.
Yet here, standing in the freezing driveway under the glare of security floodlights, was a creature born of that exact same violence—and it was the only thing that had ever made his daughter look truly alive.
"Set up the heated kennel in the east courtyard," Vincenzo ordered, his voice returning to its usual iron authority. "And get a veterinarian out here. I want a full blood panel, parasite treatment, and a check on those scars. If the animal has fleas, fire the shelter director by morning."
Arya looked up, her pen moving swiftly across her notepad.
He sleeps inside, she wrote.

Vincenzo stared at his daughter, then down at the massive, battle-scarred beast standing protectively at her side. Titan bared his teeth in a wide, intimidating yawn that looked suspiciously like a grin.
"Inside," Vincenzo sighed, running a hand through his silvering hair. "Right. Of course. Because what is one more unpredictable monster sleeping under my roof?"
