Chapter 5 - The Truth Unveiled

The courtroom went dead silent you could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.
David Vance handed the tablet to the court bailiff, who plugged it into the master audio system. Judge Althaus gave a sharp nod, and the courtroom speakers crackled to life.
At first, there was only the faint hum of hospital equipment and the soft shuffling of shoes. Then, a sweet, youthful voice filled the room—Lila’s voice.
“It’s okay, Mr. Vance. Take your time. You don't have to be alone anymore.”
A pause. The sound of a heavy, trembling breath. Then, an elderly, frail voice—Arthur Vance himself, speaking clearly for the first time in over a year.
“You smell like cinnamon,” Arthur’s recorded voice whispered. “Just like my Sarah. Before the fire took them all away from me.”
Lila’s voice answered gently: “My mom says memories are like baked goods—even when they cool down, the sweetness stays if you keep them close.”
A heavy sob on the audio. Then, Arthur’s voice, firm and resolute: “My family abandoned me to this tomb years ago. They only visit when my heart monitor blips. But you... you brought me life. Get Dr. Hayes. I want my will rewritten today. Every last cent of what my blood relatives tried to steal... I'm giving it to someone who actually knows what love tastes like.”
The courtroom was frozen in absolute shock.
In the front row, my mother had gone completely white, her mouth hanging open in horror. Julian Vance slammed his fist against the wooden pew, turning a furious shade of red.
David Vance turned off the audio and looked directly at the judge. "Your Honor, the decedent was fully lucid, emotionally sound, and acting entirely out of his own free will, reacting to an act of pure, unadulterated human kindness that his so-called 'loving family' hadn't shown him in a decade."
Judge Althaus looked up from her notes, her stern expression softening as she glanced across the room toward Lila, who was now quietly wiping a tear from her cheek.
The judge looked over at Thorne, then at my mother, with undisguised contempt.
"The court has listened to the audio evidence," Judge Althaus announced, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the courtroom. "There is zero evidence of coercion, fraud, or undue influence. The codicil is fully authentic, executed by a competent testator of sound mind."

She banged her gavel down with a sharp, definitive crack.
"Case dismissed. The estate distribution stands as written."
