Chapter 6 - The Calm After the Storm

The lights returned at 3:00 AM, a sudden, blinding flash that signaled the end of the nightmare.
The house was filled with the blue and red dance of police cruisers. Paramedics were tending to Claire on a stretcher in the living room, her arm in a temporary splint. She was weak, but she was awake, and she was holding Noah’s hand.
Mark had been led out in handcuffs, his face bruised and his head hanging low. The accomplice was found an hour later, stuck in a snowdrift three miles down the road.
Richard sat on the front porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching the sun begin to bleed orange across the horizon. The storm was finally breaking. The world looked clean, white, and still.
Claire walked out of the house, leaning on a cane, her arm in a cast. She sat down beside him, resting her head on his shoulder.
"You came for us, Dad," she whispered.
"I always will," he said, his voice thick with emotion.
"I found the drive," she said, pulling a small, silver object from her pocket. "It's all there. Every bit of his corruption. The police said it's enough to put him away for life. And the investors... they’re all connected. You took down a whole network, Dad."
Richard looked at his daughter, then at his grandson, who was watching the mailman drive by from the front window, just as he always did.

The nightmare was over. The house was quiet, the air was warming up, and for the first time in years, Richard felt a sense of peace that went deeper than the marrow of his bones. He had faced the storm, he had faced the darkness, and he had come out the other side.
He reached out and took Claire’s hand. The sock on Noah’s foot was finally, perfectly warm. And as the sun rose higher, Richard knew that they were finally, truly, going to be okay.
