Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Hammer

The wedding did not happen.

By 2:00 PM, the Palmer House Grand Ballroom was a scene of utter chaos. The senators, CEOs, and governors who had dressed in their finest tuxedos and glittering gowns did not wait for the string quartet to play. As the news of the federal raid on Whitmore Global spread through the room like wildfire, the guests began to slip away, their private drivers idling at the curb as they fled the sinking ship of the Whitmore dynasty.

By 3:00 PM, federal agents in dark blue windbreakers had arrived at the hotel, sealing the executive suites and executing arrest warrants for Charles and Alexander Whitmore for obstruction of justice and financial fraud.

I sat in the back of Vance Sterling’s black SUV, parked across the street from the hotel’s main entrance. The snow was still falling, but the heat in the vehicle was warm and comforting.

"They're coming out," Vance said, pointing toward the heavy brass doors of the Palmer House.

I watched as Alexander was led out of the hotel by two federal marshals. His hands were cuffed in front of him, his Savile Row tuxedo jacket pulled over his wrists to hide the steel. His face was pale, his eyes hollow as the cameras of a dozen local news crews flashed in his face.

Behind him came Charles, his head bowed, looking old and withered under the harsh afternoon light. Evelyn and Brooke followed, their faces covered with silk scarves as they screamed at the reporters who swarmed the sidewalk.

There was no grace. There was no dignity. There was only the raw, ugly reality of a family that had believed their money made them gods, now finding out they were nothing more than common criminals.

My phone rang. It was my father.

"Emmy," his warm, steady voice filled the car. "The federal prosecutor just called. The evidence we provided from the foundation’s offshore accounts is absolute. They’re offering Alexander a plea deal of twelve years if he cooperates and implicates his father. Charles is looking at twenty."

"And the medical report, Dad?" I asked. "The one they forged about me?"

"Dr. Aris Thorne has already confessed," my father said, a deep, satisfied rumble in his voice. "He admitted that Evelyn Whitmore paid him fifty thousand dollars to falsify your medical records and leak them to the blogs. The state medical board is revoking his license on Monday, and the district attorney is filing charges for defamation and medical identity theft. Your name is clean, sweetheart."

I closed my eyes, letting a long, deep breath escape my lungs.

"Thank you, Dad."

"You did this, Emily," he said. "You had the courage to stand up to them when they thought you were nothing. I've never been prouder of you."

I hung up the phone and looked out the window.

Alexander was being shoved into the back of a black sedan. Just before the door closed, he looked across the street, his eyes locking onto the tinted windows of Vance’s SUV. He couldn't see me, but he knew I was there. He knew the girl he had tried to humiliate, the girl he had wanted to stand in the back in a maid’s uniform, was the one who had pulled the lever that collapsed his entire world.

"Where to now, Emily?" Vance asked, shifting the car into drive.

"Let's go home, Vance," I said. "I have a lot of packing to do."
