Chapter 6 - A New Hierarchy in Chicago

Dawn broke over Lake Michigan, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant strokes of gold, crimson, and bruised violet.
The seventy-second floor of the Apex Building was eerily quiet. Federal agents and local police had come and gone within the hour, quietly escorted out by Garrett and a dozen loyal enforcers after Damian made a single phone call to the Mayor’s office explaining that a localized security breach had been "successfully resolved."
In the executive office, the air smelled of ozone, gunsmoke, and expensive espresso.
Damian Russo sat behind his mahogany desk, staring at a fresh set of contracts spread out across the polished wood. But this time, there were no shipping manifests or union disputes.
There was a single sheet of paper titled: PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT: VANGUARD-RUSSO HOLDINGS.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing my sensible black flats and a fresh grey cardigan, sipping a cup of black coffee as I looked out over the city.
Damian picked up a gold-plated fountain pen, his eyes fixed on me with a profound, unshakeable respect.
"Fifty-fifty split of the consolidated holdings," Damian said quietly, his voice steady. "You run security, intelligence, and acquisitions. I handle the public-facing boardrooms. And Hazel..." He paused, offering a rare, genuine smile. "You never have to worry about being late again."

I turned away from the window, walking slowly across the marble floor until I stood on the other side of the mahogany desk. I picked up the golden pen, signed my name in clean, precise, flawless cursive, and slid the contract back across the wood.
"Good," I said, my lips curling into a sharp, confident smile. "Because starting today, Mr. Russo... I set the schedule."
