Chapter 3 - The Assets of War

The sheer terror radiating from Adrian and Marissa was palpable, thick enough to choke on. For years, Adrian had hidden behind his polished corporate persona, using intimidation, legal manipulation, and physical coercion to bend everyone around him to his will. But power built on sand crumbles the moment the foundation begins to shift.

"Get them out of here!" Marissa shrieked, her voice cracking as Brutus crept two steps closer, his massive paws making no sound against the Persian rug. "Adrian, do something! Call the guards!"

"The guards are currently tied up," I said calmly, tilting my wrist so the encrypted interface caught the light. "Or rather, locked out. When I activated Protocol Phoenix, the estate's automated blast doors dropped across every exterior exit and internal stairwell. Nobody is coming in, and nobody is getting out until I clear the security logs."

Adrian's face twisted into an ugly mask of rage and panic. He lunged forward, abandoning all pretense of civil negotiation, and swung the heavy brass letter opener directly toward my face.

He had always relied on physical intimidation. He assumed that because I couldn't see the strike coming, I wouldn't be able to defend myself.

He was catastrophically wrong.

Before the metal could even clear the halfway point of its arc, Atlas moved with blinding speed, intercepting Adrian's wrist in mid-air. With a sharp snap of his jaws and a commanding growl, Atlas forced Adrian's arm downward, sending the letter opener clattering harmlessly across the marble floor. At the same time, Brutus closed the distance, planting his massive bulk directly between Adrian and me, a living wall of muscle that radiated raw, unbridled threat.

Adrian stumbled backward, tripping over the edge of the rug and crashing hard onto his back. He stared up in horror as two more of the massive dogs moved in, standing over him with their heavy paws planted near his chest, effectively pinning him to the floor without sinking a single tooth into his flesh. Discipline. Precision. Controlled devastation.

"Elena—wait, Elena, let's talk about this," Adrian stammered, his voice pitching high with desperation as he raised his hands defensively. "We're family! We can share the company! Fifty-fifty! Board seats, dividends, everything you ever wanted!"

I walked over slowly, my bare feet making soft contact with the floor. I stopped just inches from where he lay, looking down in the direction of his frantic voice.

"For eleven years, Adrian, I built Vale Meridian Group while you played golf and took credit for my acquisitions," I said, my voice dangerously soft. "You embezzled four million dollars from the corporate charity fund to finance your extravagant lifestyle in Manhattan. You systematically harassed my administrative assistants, and you thought you could push me down a flight of stairs and call it an accident if I didn't sign your fraudulent transfer documents."

Adrian went completely rigid. "How... how could you possibly know about the embezzlement?"

"Numbers don't lie, Adrian. And unlike people, they don't try to sweet-talk you while they pick your pocket," I replied. "Every single transaction left a digital footprint. I routed your offshore accounts into a frozen escrow holding three weeks ago. As of midnight tonight, Vale Meridian Group's forensic audit team officially handed your name over to the federal prosecutor's office."

Marissa gasped, her knees buckling as she slid down the bookshelf, landing in a pathetic heap on the floor. "Federal... prosecutor? No. No, you can't do that. We have the files on your parents—"

"The basement?" I interrupted, turning my face toward her direction with a cold, unyielding smile. "Did you really think I would leave my adoptive parents unprotected in a house filled with vipers? The moment you locked them down there, the automated security detail rerouted them through the underground subterranean safe tunnel directly to the federal marshal's safehouse three miles away."

Adrian stared up at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The horrifying realization of his utter, comprehensive defeat finally settled into his bones. He had walked into a trap of his own making, completely blind to the fact that the woman he thought was helpless had been orchestrating his downfall every step of the way.

"Now," I said, raising my voice slightly so it resonated through the sprawling, silent halls of the estate. "Let's talk about what happens to people who try to steal what isn't theirs."
