I spent the day sequestered in my office, pouring over the "Background Research" folder. I found the emails between Lourdes and Ricardo dating back two years. They had been planning a "correction program" for Sophie since the day she turned seven. They were upset because she was "too artistic," "too imaginative," and "not disciplined enough for a woman of her heritage."
They were grooming her. They were trying to strip away her identity because it didn't fit their narrow, miserable view of the world.
Martha Welch, my coworker’s wife, called me that afternoon. She was terrified. "Lourdes came to my door, Ben. She knows I filmed it. She’s threatening me."
"Don't open the door," I said, my heart pounding. "I’m sending security. And Martha? You’re a hero. You saved her life."
