Chapter 5 - A New Beginning on Maple StreetThe moving truck was small—just a rented box van parked curbside on Maple Street.

Spring had finally arrived in Willow Creek, bursting through the lingering chill of winter with vibrant green grass, blooming tulips, and warm afternoon sunshine that chased away the shadows of the past months.

Natalie stood in the center of the living room at 1442 Maple Street, packing the last few cardboard boxes containing Andrew’s personal belongings—items that would be placed in a keepsake trunk for Ashley when she grew older.

Footsteps padded softly down the hallway.

Ashley walked into the living room, wearing a bright yellow sundress and carrying her favorite stuffed puppy under one arm. She looked around the familiar room, her expression thoughtful, touched by a maturity beyond her seven years.

"Are we really leaving today, Natalie?" Ashley asked softly.

Natalie walked over, knelt down so she was eye-level with the little girl, and brushed a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.

"We are, sweetie," Natalie said gently. "We’re moving into my apartment downtown. It has a big sunny window in the bedroom just for your stuffed puppy, and Mrs. Gable promised she’s going to bake us chocolate chip cookies every Sunday afternoon."

Ashley looked down for a moment, tracing the pattern of the wooden floorboards with her sneaker. Then she looked back up, her dark eyes shining with a quiet, resilient strength.

"Daddy would have liked Mrs. Gable's cookies," Ashley said, her voice steady. "He always said she made the best chocolate chips in the whole neighborhood."

"Yes, he did," Natalie agreed, her heart swelling with an aching, beautiful love. "And do you know what else, Ashley? Every time we hear that music box play You Are My Sunshine, your daddy is right there with us in our hearts. He never left us. He just lives inside our memories now."

Ashley nodded slowly. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the small wooden music box, and placed it carefully on top of the last packing box.

"Can we leave the door unlocked just for a minute?" Ashley asked suddenly.

Natalie blinked in surprise. "Why honey?"

"So if daddy ever comes looking for us here, he'll know we didn't lock him out," Ashley said simply, with the pure, unwavering logic of a child who had learned that love transcends even the deepest rivers.

Natalie felt a lump rise in her throat. She stood up, walked over to the front door, turned the deadbolt just enough so the latch clicked loosely, and left it resting against the frame, letting the warm spring breeze drift inside.

"There," Natalie smiled, taking Ashley’s small hand in her own. "The door is open. Always."
