Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guests

The grand garden pavilion at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek was bathed in bright Texas morning sunlight. Crystal flutes of champagne sparkled on silver trays, classical harp music drifted through the air, and floral arrangements of white hydrangeas lined the marble archways.

Carmen Robles stood in the center of the patio wearing a bespoke lavender silk suit, a broad-brimmed designer hat, and three carats of diamond studs in her ears. She held a glass of Dom Pérignon, laughing charmingly with a group of wealthy country club socialites and local city council members.

To her left stood Javier, looking dashing in a tailored navy blazer. But beneath his bright white smile, a vein throbbed nervously at his temple. He kept checking his phone every thirty seconds.

“Carmen, dear,” one of the socialites, a woman named Victoria, purred softly. “Where is the lovely bride? We’ve been waiting an hour to toast the newlyweds!”

Carmen waved her hand dismissively, offering an practiced, sympathetic sigh. “Oh, you know how young girls are these days, Victoria. Poor Sofia had a bit too much champagne at the reception last night and came down with a sudden migraine. She’s resting back at her condo. Javier was just about to go check on her.”

Javier swallowed hard, nodding quickly. “Yes, absolutely. She’s... delicate.”

“Is she really?” a booming, resonant voice echoed across the quiet garden patio.

The harpist stopped playing. The room went dead silent.

Every head turned toward the stone staircase leading into the pavilion.

Alexander Vance descended the stairs slowly, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. Beside him walked my daughter, Sofia.

She wore a dark velvet high-necked dress that did not hide the thick white medical bandages wrapped around her neck or the severe black-and-purple bruising blooming across her jaw and left cheek. Her split lip was stitched neatly, and her eyes were cold, clear, and unyielding.

I walked right behind them, holding my head high, flanked by two uniformed Dallas Police lieutenants and four private security operatives carrying sealed metal evidence cases.

Carmen’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers. It shattered against the flagstone floor, spraying white wine across her manicured shoes.

Javier went completely gray, his knees visibly buckling as he took a step back toward his father.

“Alexander…” Carmen stammered, her voice losing every drop of its polished sophistication. “What... what is the meaning of this scene? What happened to Sofia?”

“You tell me, Carmen,” Alexander said, his voice carrying clearly to every corner of the crowded pavilion. “You were the one who held her down six hours ago in Suite 402.”

Gasping erupted through the crowd of socialites. Victoria covered her mouth in absolute shock, staring at Sofia’s swollen face.

“That’s absurd!” Carmen shrieked, her face turning a blotchy red. “This is a outrageous lie! Sofia had an accident! She’s trying to embarrass my family because—”

“Shut your mouth,” I commanded, stepping forward, my voice cutting through her panic like a whip. “I am her mother. She knocked on my door soaked in her own blood at three in the morning. She told me everything, Carmen. Forty strikes. Six women holding her down. A forced property transfer deed.”

Sofia stepped away from her father, taking three deliberate steps toward Javier.

Javier looked down at the ground, trembling. “Sofia... baby... please... let’s talk about this in private—”

“Look at me, Javier,” Sofia said. Her voice didn't shake. It was pure steel.

Javier slowly raised his eyes, unable to meet her gaze for more than a second.

“You stood outside that door,” Sofia said, her words dropping like heavy stones into the silent room. “I screamed your name while your mother tore out my hair and beat me with a leather strap. And you told her not to leave marks on my face because of this brunch.”

The socialites gasped in disgust. Several prominent business partners of the Robles family backed away, their expressions turning to pure revulsion.

“She’s lying! She’s crazy!” Carmen yelled, grabbing Javier’s arm frantically. “Javier, tell them! Tell them she’s unstable!”

Before Javier could speak, Detective Miller stepped forward from behind Alexander. He pulled a heavy tablet from his portfolio and tapped the screen.

“Mrs. Robles,” Detective Miller announced loudly. “At 4:00 AM this morning, crime scene investigators dusted Suite 402 at the Crescent Hotel. We recovered the torn wedding dress, blood spatters matching Sofia Vance’s DNA on the rug, six distinct sets of fingerprints on the door frame, and the leather strap hidden in the suite’s service closet—bearing your personal fingerprints.”

Detective Miller turned to the uniformed officers.

“Execute the warrants.”
