Part 4: The War of Attrition

The legal chess match escalated into an all-out war over the next two weeks.

The cyber warfare unit came through with devastating precision. The decrypted files from Preston’s safe revealed a massive, systematic fraud scheme that went far beyond simple overbilling. Whitmore Industries had been bribing foreign port officials, falsifying shipping manifests, and using substandard materials on military supply vessels, directly endangering American servicemen and women overseas.

With this evidence in hand, Marcus Vance—Major Vance’s father and a legendary retired federal prosecutor—bypassed the corrupt local district courts entirely. He presented the case directly to a secret federal grand jury in Washington, D.C.

The response was swift and merciless. At 0600 hours on a Tuesday, the Department of Justice issued a total asset forfeiture and seizure order against Whitmore Industries and all personal bank accounts belonging to Preston and Evelyn Whitmore.

I watched through a remote surveillance feed as federal agents arrived at the Whitmore corporate headquarters in New York. They didn't just walk in; they sealed the building, rolling out blue bins filled with seized hard drives and corporate documents. Simultaneously, the Whitmores' private jets were grounded at JFK airport, and their multi-million-dollar real estate portfolio was frozen.

By that afternoon, the media blackout shattered. When a story involves billions of dollars in military fraud and national security risks, not even the Whitmore family money could buy enough silence. The headlines were savage: THE BILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD: HOW THE WHITMORE EMPIRE CHEATED AMERICAN SOLDIERS.

But Evelyn Whitmore was a cornered viper, and cornered vipers strike with everything they have left.

That evening, I received a restricted call on my personal encrypted line while sitting at Sophia’s bedside at Walter Reed. Sophia was coloring in a sketchbook, her smile slowly returning, though she still looked fragile.

"Colonel Hayes," Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, no longer arrogant, but raspy, desperate, and filled with pure malice. "You think you’ve won because you found some accounting discrepancies? You are playing with fire."

"I am the fire, Evelyn," I said quietly, stepping out of the room into the quiet hospital corridor so Sophia wouldn't hear. "And your house is currently burning to ash."

"Listen to me, you miserable little soldier," Evelyn hissed. "We still have friends. Friends who don't care about federal grand juries. I have a file on your daughter. Photos, medical records, private journals we took from her room. If you do not drop these federal charges and return the data cache within twenty-four hours, I will release everything to the public. I will destroy her reputation. I will make sure she is painted as a unstable, drug-addicted lunatic who fabricated the domestic abuse to hide her own failures. She will never be able to show her face in public again."

I stood perfectly still, looking through the glass window at my daughter, who was currently laughing at something a nurse had said. The anger inside me burned away, leaving behind a cold, crystalline focus.

"Evelyn," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You really don't understand the military, do you? We don't negotiate with terrorists. And we certainly don't negotiate with extortionists who are dumb enough to make threats over a recorded federal line."

May you like

"What?" she gasped.

"The line you are calling is an official U.S. Army command link," I informed her. "Every word you just said has been automatically logged, traced, and authenticated. You just added federal extortion and witness intimidation to your indictment list. Sleep well tonight, Evelyn. It will be your last night in your own bed."
