Chapter 4 - The Golden Trap in South Beach

At 3:00 PM, under the blazing sun of Miami's Ocean Drive, Mark Vance was rapidly losing his sanity.

He and Chloe were sitting on a wooden bench across from the beach, surrounded by four heavy leather suitcases they had been forced to drag out of the Setai lobby themselves after being formally evicted for non-payment.

Chloe was sitting on her luggage, sobbing hysterically into her hands, her three-thousand-dollar mascara running in black streaks down her face.

"This is insane, Mark!" she screamed, slapping his shoulder violently. "My bank cards are locked! My corporate login for First National Bank was revoked ten minutes ago! I got an emergency alert on my backup tablet saying the Federal Reserve board has placed my regulatory license under emergency suspension!"

Mark was pacing back and forth across the sidewalk, sweat soaking through the collar of his bespoke Italian shirt, his manicured hands shaking uncontrollably as he stared at his useless, disconnected phone.

"Shut up, Chloe! Let me think!" Mark hissed, darting terrified glances at two police cruisers parked across the street. "It's Maya's mother. It has to be."

"Her mother?!" Chloe sneered, her voice shrill with disbelief. "Her mother is a retired widow! She lives in a suburb in Illinois! How could a old woman freeze international bank accounts in Nassau and place an administrative hold on a federal banking license in six hours?!"

"You don't know who she was!" Mark shouted, his eyes wide with sudden, terrifying realization. "I thought she was just some washed-up ex-cop living on a state pension! But when I was looking through Maya's private family files last year, I saw her mother's service record! She wasn't just a detective, Chloe... she was the Chief of Criminal Investigations for the entire city of Chicago! She spent twenty years working federal task forces with the Department of Justice!"

Chloe went pale, her sobbing instantly cutting off as the weight of Mark's words hit her like a physical blow. "What... what does that mean?"

"It means," a calm, smooth voice spoke from directly behind them, "that you picked the wrong family to destroy."

Mark and Chloe spun around simultaneously.

Standing on the sidewalk, framed by two tall, broad-shouldered private security operatives in tactical gear, was Frank Castle. He was holding a leather folder containing three sealed court orders.

"Mark Vance," Frank said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rumble. "And Chloe Miller. My name is Frank Castle. I represent Mrs. Evelyn Reed."

"You... you can't touch us!" Mark shouted, trying to maintain a posture of aggressive bravado, though his knees were visibly trembling. "This is Florida! You have no jurisdiction here! Whatever civil dispute Maya has with me regarding marital property will be handled by our attorneys in civil court!"

Frank let out a short, bark of dark laughter.

"Civil court?" Frank shook his head, pulling a set of high-resolution photographic prints from his folder and holding them in front of Mark's face.

The photographs showed detailed, close-up captures of Mark's gold signet ring, side-by-side with official Treasury Department wire-transfer logs linking MV Capital LLC to five secret bank accounts operated by Aegis Global Holdings in Zurich.

Mark’s breath caught in his throat. The color left his face so fast he looked as if he were about to faint onto the pavement.

"You thought Aegis Global was your private safety net, didn't you, Mark?" Frank said smoothly. "You thought that by washing Evelyn's fourteen-thousand-dollar monthly payments through Aegis shell accounts, you were building a nice little off-grid fortune for you and your mistress."

"How... how do you know about Aegis?" Mark rasped, his voice barely audible over the sound of the ocean waves crashing nearby.

"Because Evelyn Reed spent three years building the original federal RICO case against Aegis Global back in 2016," Frank revealed with a cold smile. "She knows every shell company, every hidden account code, and every dirty banker connected to that network. The moment she saw your signet ring on the camera footage, she handed the entire financial structure over to FinCEN on a silver platter."

Chloe shrieked in terror, jumping up from her suitcase and grabbing Mark's arm. "Mark! He's lying! Tell me he's lying!"

"He's not lying, Chloe," Frank continued, turning his gaze toward her. "In fact, two agents from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and three detectives from the Miami-Dade Economic Crimes Unit are walking across the street right now."

Mark and Chloe looked up in absolute panic.

Two dark blue sedans had just pulled up to the curb, their red and blue strobe lights flashing silently behind the windshield. Four federal agents in navy windbreakers bearing the letters FBI and FINCEN stepped out, flanked by local law enforcement officers.

"Mark Vance, Chloe Miller," the lead FBI agent announced, pulling a pair of emergency federal arrest warrants from his coat. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit federal bank fraud, wire fraud, grand money laundering under the RICO Act, and interstate flight to avoid prosecution."

"No! Wait!" Mark screamed, turning to run toward the beach, but Frank Castle took one swift step forward, seized Mark by the back of his designer jacket, swept his legs out from under him, and slammed him face-first onto the concrete sidewalk.

CRACK.

Mark’s nose broke against the stone, blood spilling across his white shirt as Frank held him pinned under a heavy leather boot.

"Hands behind your back, Vance," the FBI agent commanded, stepping in and pulling Mark's arms back, snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Beside them, Chloe was dropped to her knees by a female federal agent, her hands cuffed behind her back as she screamed and kicked against the pavement, her luxury purse spilling its contents across the dirty sidewalk.

"Evelyn Reed sends her regards," Frank whispered into Mark's ear as the federal agents hauled the bleeding, sobbing man to his feet. "She told me to tell you one last thing, Mark."

Mark wiped the blood from his lip, his eyes wide with frantic, hopeless terror. "What... what did she say?"

May you like

Frank smiled—a cold, terrifying expression that made Mark's blood run cold.

"She said: 'Silence solves the case. Now comes the sentence.'"
