Chapter 6 - The Warmth of the Sun

Four weeks later, the morning sun was shining brightly through the windows of our living room.

The house was quiet, smelling of lavender and fresh-brewed coffee. On the sofa, Laura sat propped up on several pillows, her face pale but glowing with a health that had seemed impossible a month ago. In her arms, wrapped in a soft, pink woolen blanket, lay Sophie.

Sophie was five pounds now. Her cheeks were starting to fill out, and she was breathing entirely on her own, her tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, beautiful rhythm.

"She’s perfect, Daniel," Laura whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder as I sat beside her.

"She is," I said, kissing the top of her head.

The front door opened, and Ethan walked into the living room, carrying a small, wooden model airplane we had spent the yesterday afternoon building. He stopped at the edge of the rug, looking at his sister.

"Can I hold her, Mom?" Ethan asked, his voice quiet but clear.

Laura smiled, her eyes filling with tears of joy. "Of course you can, sweetie. Come sit here."

Ethan sat down on the sofa beside his mother, his arms forming a careful, protective cradle. Laura gently transferred the sleeping baby into his lap.

Ethan looked down at Sophie. His face, which had been so tight and guarded for so many months, finally broke into a wide, beautiful smile.

"She's warm, Dad," Ethan said, looking up at me.

"She is, Ethan," I said, kneeling in front of them and wrapping my arms around both of my children. "And she’s going to stay warm. Because of you."

He looked back down at Sophie, his index finger reaching out to touch her tiny, sleeping fist.

The baby’s fingers slowly opened, her tiny, translucent nails catching the golden morning light.

And then, with the simple, perfect instinct of a sister who knew she was safe, her hand closed around his.

Once.

Twice.

The red outlet was forgotten. The machines were gone.

And in the warm, sunlit silence of our home, the code of our family was finally, beautifully complete.
