Chapter 2 - The Rehearsal RuinedThe grand ballroom of the St. Regis Chicago was draped in thousands of white orchids, silk table runners, and crystal chandeliers that reflected the ambient glow of two hundred scented candles. Over a hundred of the city’s political elites, real estate tycoons, and high-society icons were gathered around champagne towers, waiting for the groom and bride to return to their rehearsal dinner.

Instead, the gilded oak doors burst open at 9:30 PM, revealing Ethan Cole—hair disheveled, suit jacket missing, and sweat glistening on his forehead.

Behind him came not his radiant fiancée in her ivory rehearsal gown, but three federal marshals and two forensic accountants carrying yellow evidence boxes.

A hush fell over the room. The soft jazz quartet faltered and stopped playing.

“Ethan?” Arthur Montgomery, Bianca’s billionaire father and a major investor in Cole Enterprises, stepped forward with a heavy glass of scotch in his hand. “Where the hell have you been? And where is Bianca? People have been waiting for two hours!”

Ethan stumbled toward the stage, his eyes wild, looking at the room full of people he had bragged to for months. His phone in his pocket was vibrating relentlessly—fifty missed calls from his bank managers, his chief financial officer, and his PR team.

“Arthur...” Ethan choked out, his voice trembling in front of the silent crowd. “Bianca... Bianca was arrested.”

Gasps echoed through the ballroom. Arthur Montgomery nearly dropped his glass. “Arrested?! On what grounds? What kind of ridiculous joke is this?”

“Aggravated assault and battery,” an FBI agent announced, stepping up to the microphone on the central stage. His voice boomed through the high-end sound system. “Ladies and gentlemen, this event is officially concluded. By order of the United States District Court, all financial assets associated with Cole Enterprises and the Montgomery-Cole Charitable Trust have been seized under federal racketeering and corporate fraud statutes.”

Panic erupted. Women in evening gowns gasped, pulling their husbands away. Waitstaff stopped serving champagne as federal agents began placing orange seizure tags on the digital displays around the room.

“This is an outrage!” Arthur roared, grabbing Ethan by his lapels and shaking him furiously. “What did you do, Ethan?! What did my daughter do?!”

“It was Claire...” Ethan stammered, his eyes glazed with terror. “She... she had a baby. Bianca pushed her... and Claire had the forensic ledgers all along. She set us up.”

Arthur stared at Ethan as if he had lost his mind. “Claire? Your ex-wife?! The quiet girl who sat in the corner during dinner parties? You told me she was a penniless nobody!”

Ethan slumped onto a gold velvet chair, staring at his hands.

He remembered the five years we spent building Cole Enterprises from a tiny two-room office in the West Loop. He remembered how he used to come home exhausted, throwing receipts on the kitchen table, while I sat up until 3:00 AM balancing the sheets, optimizing tax strategies, and creating the proprietary valuation algorithms that made his company worth three hundred million dollars.

When the money started pouring in, Ethan stopped seeing me as his partner. He saw me as a relic of his humble past. He wanted a trophy wife who looked good on yachts in Amalfi, not a woman who spent her weekends analyzing spreadsheets. He brought in Bianca, convinced himself that he was the sole genius behind the empire, and pushed me out with a forged settlement agreement that offered me a pathetic lump sum and no equity.

He thought I had signed it out of grief and exhaustion.

He didn't know that three days before I left our house, I had discovered an encrypted shadow ledger on his personal server—proof that he had been skimming millions from client escrow accounts to fund Bianca’s lavish lifestyle and his own failed crypto ventures.

I hadn't signed those papers out of surrender. I had signed them to buy time while I assembled an airtight, ironclad dossier for the Department of Justice.

Back at St. Matthew’s Hospital, the room was quiet.

I sat by the window in the NICU, watching the city lights flicker through the glass. Noah was sleeping peacefully in his incubator, his tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, perfect rhythm.

Eleanor Vance walked into the room, holding two paper cups of herbal tea. She handed one to me and leaned against the window frame.

“The St. Regis is a warzone,” Eleanor said smoothly, taking a sip. “Arthur Montgomery’s legal team is already trying to distance him from Ethan. Bianca is currently sitting in a holding cell at the 1st District precinct. Her bail hearing is set for 9:00 AM, and Detective Vance is insisting on a high cash bond due to the severity of Noah’s injuries.”

“And Ethan?” I asked, keeping my gaze on my son.

“His personal credit cards were declined at the hospital valet,” Eleanor smiled faintly. “He had to take a taxi home, but when he arrives at his penthouse, he’ll find federal marshals changing the locks. Every piece of property purchased with embezzled corporate funds is being attached to the civil suit we filed two hours ago.”

I took a sip of the warm tea, feeling a deep, profound sense of stillness wash over me.

For two years, Ethan had made me feel small. He had made me doubt my worth, my intelligence, and my sanity. He had left me alone in a cold apartment while I carried his child through a high-risk pregnancy, praying every night that my baby would survive.
