Chapter 4 - The Iron Door Closes

Julian Vance stood on the third step of the county courthouse, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke Italian suit. He was sixty years old, with silver hair brushed straight back, teeth that had been bleached to the shade of porcelain fixtures, and the supremely confident smile of a man who had never lost a case where the opposing party had less than ten million dollars in liquidity.

Behind him stood Una, wearing a black wool coat with an ermine collar, looking like an empress who had been slightly inconvenienced by a peasant uprising. Bellamy stood to her left, wearing oversized designer sunglasses to hide her nonexistent tears, clutching a small leather Bible that had clearly been purchased at an airport gift shop that morning.

A forest of microphones from every local news affiliate bristled before the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Vance began, his voice carrying the deep, resonant cadence of a seasoned litigator. "This morning, a grave injustice continues to be perpetrated against one of this state's most philanthropic and honorable families. My clients, Mrs. Una Vandermeer and her children, have been subjected to a coordinated, militarized home invasion carried out by an unstable individual utilizing federal credentials to bypass state sovereign

ty—"

A loud, screeching squeal of tires cut him off mid-sentence.

Three unmarked black Chevrolet Suburbans, followed by four marked State Highway Patrol cruisers and two County Sheriff’s tactical vans, rounded the corner of the municipal square at high speed. They didn't slow down to parallel park. They hopped the granite curbs of the plaza, tires smoking against the decorative brickwork, effectively encircling the entire steps of the courthouse.

The press corps gasped, several camera operators swinging their lenses away from Vance to capture the sudden wall of black steel and flashing blue-and-red strobes.

The doors of the Suburbans flew open. Out stepped twelve members of the Joint Federal-State Violent Crimes Task Force, dressed in olive-drab tactical gear, carbines held in the low-ready position. Behind them walked Detective Marcus Ruiz and two federal marshals in plain clothes, carrying thick, blue-backed warrants.

"What is the meaning of this theater?" Vance bellowed, stepping forward with his hands raised, his voice dripping with theatrical outrage. "I am in the middle of a formal address! You are obstructing the legal counsel of—"

Ruiz didn't even slow his stride. He walked straight up the courthouse steps, flanked by two towering tactical officers, and shoved a folded piece of paper directly against Vance’s silk tie.

"Julian Vance," Ruiz said, his voice amplified by the bank of microphones still live on the podium. "Step aside or you will be placed in custody for obstruction of justice under Title Eighteen."

"You have no authority to disrupt this—"

"Federal arrest warrant," Ruiz barked into the microphones. "Signed twenty minutes ago by Chief Judge Evelyn Mercer of the United States District Court. Bellamy Vandermeer. Declan Vandermeer. Una Vandermeer. Step down to the sidewalk. Hands where we can see them."

The plaza went dead silent. The only sound was the whirring of camera lenses and the distant, rhythmic hum of the tactical vehicles' diesel engines.

"This is absurd!" Una shrieked, her voice losing every shred of aristocratic control. Her eyes widened into wild, furious spheres. "Do you know who I am? Do you know who my late husband was? I have the Governor’s personal cell phone number! I will have every single one of your badges stripped before lunchtime!"

"Ma'am," one of the federal marshals said, his voice completely devoid of emotion as he ascended the steps. "Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"Don't you dare touch me, you common pig!" she screamed, swinging her designer leather handbag at the marshal’s face.

The marshal didn't flinch. He blocked the bag with his left forearm, stepped inside her reach, grabbed her right wrist with a practiced, mechanical grip, and twisted her arm behind her back. Before Una could draw breath to scream again, the cold steel of high-security hinged handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

"Mom!" Bellamy shrieked, backing away toward the heavy bronze doors of the courthouse. "Declan, help her! Declan!"

Declan wasn't helping anyone. He had already backed himself into a corner against the stone balustrade, his hands raised in the air, his face the color of skim milk.

"I didn't do anything," Declan stammered, looking wildly at the reporters whose cameras were drinking in every micro-second of his cowardice. "I was just there! It was Bellamy! She’s the one who had the hammer! I told her not to do it! I have the text messages!"

"You cowardly piece of garbage!" Bellamy screamed, turning on her brother with her manicured claws out. "You told me to do it! You said the insurance would pay for the new system and we could keep the cash settlement! You recorded it!"

"Both of you, shut up!" Vance roared, his face turning purple as he realized the microphones were broadcasting every word directly to the noon news broadcast. "Shut your mouths! Not another word!"

Two female tactical officers moved in on Bellamy. When Bellamy tried to kick them with her three-inch designer heels, she was taken down with clinical efficiency, her face pressed firmly against the cold, gray granite of the courthouse steps.

"My face!" Bellamy shrieked, her cheek squished against the stone, her silk blouse tearing at the shoulder seam. "Get off me! Do you know how many followers I have? You're ruining my life! You're breaking my arm!"

"Clear the steps," Ruiz ordered, waving his hand to the waiting transport vans.

Within ninety seconds, the three pillars of the Vandermeer family were cuffed, searched, and shoved into the metal-caged seats of separate police transports.

As the rear doors of the van slammed shut on Una’s furious, screaming face, Ruiz turned to the stunned, silent crowd of journalists.

"The State Attorney and the Department of Justice have filed joint charges," Ruiz announced, leaning over the podium microphones. "Bellamy Vandermeer is charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Tampering with Life-Sustaining Medical Equipment. Declan Vandermeer is charged with Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Depraved Indifference Child Abuse, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. Una Vandermeer is charged with Felony Conspiracy, Obstruction of Justice, and Witness Intimidation. Bail has been set at zero pending formal arraignment."

Ruiz paused, looked directly into the primary lens of the State News network, and added:
