Chapter 4 - The Rat's Gambit

For forty-eight hours, the fortress on the Hudson was a bubble of absolute peace.
Julian’s staff treated me with an exquisite, quiet respect that felt foreign to someone who had spent her life being treated as an inconvenience. A private chef prepared my meals; fresh clothes tailored to my measurements arrived from high-end boutiques in Manhattan; and Julian himself never left for business without kissing my forehead and ensuring I had everything I needed.
My bruised cheek was fading to a dull yellow. My shoulder had regained its strength. But the quiet was an illusion.
On the third afternoon, I was sitting in Julian’s grand library, reading by the floor-to-ceiling windows, when the double doors swung open. Julian walked in, followed by Marco and two men I had never seen before—sharp-eyed men carrying encrypted laptops.
“It has begun,” Julian said, signaling his men to set up their equipment on the long mahogany conference table.
“What has?” I asked, closing my book.
“Your family’s desperation,” Julian replied, walking over to me and offering his hand. “Come see.”
I joined him at the table. One of the men turned a laptop toward us.
On the screen was an audio file playing an intercepted phone call. Beneath it was a live surveillance feed of a seedy diner on the outskirts of the industrial district. Through the rain-streaked window of the diner, I saw my father, Paige, and an unfamiliar man with slicked-back gray hair, a heavy gold chain, and a scarred jaw.
“That is Sal Moretti,” Marco explained. “We tapped his secondary burner line two hours ago.”
Julian clicked *Play* on the audio interface.
My sister Paige’s voice crackled through the high-end speakers, breathless, furious, and dripping with venom.
*“—I’m telling you, Sal! She’s dating Julian Vance! Do you know how much money that bastard has? He broke my front door down! He threatened my kids! Marissa is his little pet! If you grab her, or if you squeeze him, you don’t just get your seventy-five grand—you can get millions out of him!”*
My stomach dropped into ice water.
*“Shut your mouth, Paige,”* my father’s raspy voice came through the recording. *“Listen to me, Moretti. Arthur Keane speaking. The house is still technically in her name, but Vance took her to his private residence. If you help us get her alone—away from his bodyguards—we can force her to sign the deed over to you directly. You take the house as collateral, wipe out our debt, and whatever Vance pays you to get her back is your bonus.”*
Moretti’s deep, gravelly voice let out a harsh laugh. *“You’re telling me that quiet little corporate bitch Arthur Keane raised is sleeping with Julian Vance? The Vance who controls the north terminals?”*
*“Yes!”* Paige pleaded. *“She’s weak, Sal! She’s a coward! She let me walk all over her for three weeks! One threat to her face and she’ll fold like wet paper! Just get your boys, pull her out of wherever Vance is hiding her, and make her sign!”*
A heavy silence lingered on the recording before Moretti spoke again. *“Vance has been squeezing my distribution lines for six months. If he’s distracted by a little piece of skirt... that gives me an opening. Meet my boys at the warehouse on 4th Street tonight at midnight. We’ll coordinate the grab.”*
The audio file ended.
I stood frozen, staring at the frozen frame of Paige’s sneering face on the screen.
They hadn't learned. They hadn't run away. Given a second chance at life, given the mercy of being allowed to walk out of my house on their own two feet, they had immediately gone to an organized crime figure to offer me up as a sacrificial lamb. They were willing to have me kidnapped, tortured, and ransomed just to clear their debts.
“Marissa?” Julian’s voice broke through my shock.
I looked at him. His winter-blue eyes were studying me intently, searching for fear, searching for tears.
I didn't cry.
Something fundamental had shifted in my chest. The broken, fragile girl who hid in the downstairs bathroom was dead. In her place was a woman who had seen the bottom of the abyss and realized that the monsters threatening her were nothing more than cowardly, greedy rats.
“They want to lure you into a trap,” I said, my voice cold, precise, and devoid of tremor.
“No, *mia cara*,” Julian corrected softly, a wolfish smirk curling his lips. “They believe they are setting a trap for me. But rats do not hunt wolves.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Moretti has been a nuisance for too long,” Julian said, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “Tonight, I am going to eradicate his entire operation. But as for your family... their fate belongs to you. Do you want them erased, Marissa? Speak the word, and Arthur, your mother, and Paige will vanish from this earth before sunrise. No bodies will ever be found.”
The offer was real. It hung in the air, heavy and lethal.
I looked at the screen, at the father who had held my arms so my sister could hit me, at the sister who wanted to sell me to a cartel boss.
“No,” I said firmly.
Julian’s eyebrow arched slightly. “No?”
“Death is too easy for them,” I replied, my eyes burning with a fierce, cold resolve. “Death means they don't have to face what they’ve done. Death means they don't have to live with the consequences. I want them ruined. I want them to lose every dollar, every shred of reputation, every illusion of power they ever possessed. I want them to look at what they’ve built, and I want to watch it burn.”
Julian stared at me for three long heartbeats. Then, a smile of profound, terrifying pride spread across his features.

“That,” Julian whispered, leaning down to press a fierce kiss to my lips, “is my queen.”
