Chapter 2 - The Military Inquiry and the Fall of Harold Hart

Dawn over the Florida coast broke in brilliant streaks of gold and bruised purple across the Atlantic horizon, but inside the county holding facility downtown, the morning light offered no comfort to Harold Hart.
When the local precinct booked him the night before for aggravated second-degree assault, Harold had been entirely unfazed. He had spent thirty years building local county bridges, schmoozing with zoning commissioners, and donating to local political campaigns. To him, cops were neighborhood acquaintances who would let a respected contractor slide after a messy family dispute.
He didn't factor in federal jurisdiction.
By 7:30 AM, two vehicles bearing dark blue federal plates and military insignia pulled into the secure precinct sally port. Special Agent Vance from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), accompanied by a military police detachment, walked through the double doors of the stationhouse with unyielding authority.
They weren’t there because Harold had punched a civilian. They were there because Harold had assaulted a senior commissioned officer of the United States Navy on active deployment orders, causing severe bodily harm and obstructing federal property rights.
In the precinct holding cell, Harold sat on a stainless-steel bench, his flannel shirt wrinkled, his calloused hands resting on his knees. When the cell door buzzed and swung open, he looked up, expecting his lawyer or perhaps a sympathetic sergeant.
Instead, he saw me.
I stood in the doorway wearing my crisp, dark Navy service uniform, the silver oak leaves of a Lieutenant Commander gleaming brightly on my collar, flanked by two towering master-at-arms in full tactical gear. My left side throbbed where the taped ribs bound my torso, but my posture was rigid, absolute, and commanding.
Harold scrambled to his feet, his face flushing a furious, mottled red.
“Evelyn?” he barked, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “What is this farce? Take those uniforms off, you ungrateful little—get me my lawyer! What are you playing at, dressing up in military costumes in a police station?”
I didn't blink. I stepped into the cell, the heavy rubber soles of my boots clicking sharply against the floor.
“You never bothered to ask what I did in the Navy, did you, Harold?” I said, my voice cold, level, and entirely devoid of emotion. “You thought I was just running supply logistics or scrubbing decks. You never read my promotion boards. You never looked at my security clearances.”
Harold’s swagger faltered for a fraction of a second, though his stubborn pride kept him puffing out his chest. “You’re my daughter! You answer to me! Family comes first, and you’re letting these outsiders humiliate your own father over a family argument about a house!”
“That house belonged to my grandmother,” I replied, stepping closer until he was forced to look directly into my eyes. “And the construction company you’ve been running out of your garage isn't a family business, Harold. It’s a criminal enterprise.”
Before Harold could sputter a reply, Special Agent Vance stepped past me into the cell, dropping a thick, red-stamped federal indictment folder onto the metal table.
“Harold Hart,” the NCIS agent recited crisply. “You are formally being transferred to federal custody under charges of interstate wire fraud, falsification of corporate titles, embezzlement of charitable trust assets, and assault on a commissioned military officer. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a federal court of law.”

Harold’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked from the federal agent to me, finally realizing that the chasm between the girl he had beaten on the living room rug and the woman standing before him was an abyss he could never cross.
As the military police slapped heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists and hauled him out of the cell, Harold didn't shout or threaten. He simply stared at the floor, muttering curses under his breath as the heavy iron doors clanged shut behind him.
