Part 2: The Crushing of the Giants

The word wife hung in the air like a poisonous gas.

My mother, who had been pretending to find the crystal centerpiece fascinating, let out a sharp, choked gasp and fainted directly onto her velvet chair, her pearls clattering against her wine glass. Vanessa dropped her bouquet entirely, her face twisting into an expression of sheer, unadulterated terror as she looked at my simple navy dress, suddenly realizing it wasn't a cheap knockoff—it was a custom, unbranded piece from a Parisian atelier that money couldn't buy without a personal invitation from the designer.

Arthur Vance’s hand remained frozen in the air. His eyes darted from Julian’s ring to mine, his mind desperately trying to connect the dots. The "family charity case," the girl he had spent twenty-six years calling a mistake, was married to the most powerful financial titan on the continent.

"W-Wife?" Nathan stammered, stumbling off the wedding altar, nearly tripping over his bride’s train. He dropped the microphone, and it hit the floor with a loud, deafening screech that made everyone flinch. "Clara... you’re married to Sterling? No. No, that’s impossible! You’re a nobody! You work at a community library!"

"She owns the library system, you idiot," Mr. Henderson roared from his table, his voice shaking with furious panic as he stood up. He didn't look at Nathan with respect anymore; he looked at him like a plague victim. "She bought the entire municipal foundation three months ago! Mr. Sterling... please! I have no part in this! I didn't know! I swear to God, I didn't know who she was!"

Henderson practically threw himself out from behind his table, his expensive Italian shoes slipping on the marble as he dropped directly onto his knees before Julian, his hands clasped together in desperate prayer. "I withdraw all my capital from Nathan's startup! Effective immediately! Please, do not liquidate my hedge fund, Mr. Sterling! My family... my children..."

"Too late, Henderson," Julian said coldly, not even glancing down at the older man sobbing at his feet. He pulled out his sleek, custom smartphone and tapped a single button. "An hour ago, I initiated a forensic audit on your secondary offshore holdings. By midnight, your line of credit will be frozen. You chose the wrong room to laugh in."

"No!" Henderson shrieked, burying his face in his hands as two of Julian’s security details gently but firmly dragged him away, his knees scraping against the floor.

Arthur Vance felt the room spinning. He looked at his son, then at his new daughter-in-law, realizing that the entire foundation of his wealth was disappearing in real-time. "Mr. Sterling... Julian... please, let us speak rationally. She is my flesh and blood. A father has a right to discipline his child—"

"You lost the right to speak her name the moment you put your hands on her," Julian said, stepping closer until he was towering over my father. Julian was a head taller, his physical presence suffocating the older man’s remaining bravado. "You told her that money matters. You told her that power matters. You told her that legacy matters. So, let us play by your rules, Arthur."

Julian tapped his phone again, placing it on speakerphone. A cold, professional voice answered immediately. "Sterling Global, Direct Command. Go ahead, Mr. Sterling."

"Execute Order Nine on Vance Shipping and Vance Technology," Julian commanded, his eyes locked onto his father’s pale face. "Call in the twenty-million-dollar maritime bonds immediately. Issue a public declaration of default. And notify the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding the dual-ledger discrepancies we flagged in Nathan’s startup prospectus."

"Understood, sir. Initiating liquidation. The public default notice will hit the wires in two minutes."

"Wait! No! You can't do this!" Nathan screamed, rushing forward, his hands reaching out to grab Julian’s jacket. But before he could even touch the fabric, Julian’s lead bodyguard, a massive man named Briggs, stepped into his path and drove a heavy fist directly into Nathan’s stomach.

Nathan collapsed onto the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air as his bride, Vanessa, shrank back against the floral arch, weeping in terror.

"This wedding is over," Julian announced to the silent, terrified crowd. He wrapped his strong arm around my waist, pulling me close against his chest. "If anyone in this room ever breathes the same air as my wife again, I will personally ensure your families spend the next three generations in bankruptcy court. Move."
