Chapter 4 - The Reckoning of Bel Air

By 2:00 PM, the grand driveway of the Bel Air mansion looked like a yard sale for fallen socialites.

Beverly and Annika stood near the iron gates, surrounded by four battered cardboard boxes containing basic clothing. Beverly’s expensive silk robe had been replaced by a cheap tracksuit, her makeup ruined by hours of crying. Annika sat on one of the boxes, sobbing into her hands as she watched luxury towing trucks haul away Edwin’s Ferrari, Beverly’s Bentley, and Annika’s Mercedes convertible.

A small crowd of reporters and paparazzi had gathered at the bottom of the hill, their cameras flashing relentlessly.

"Mrs. Moretti! Is it true your family embezzled millions from Stanford Global?!" a reporter shouted through a megaphone.

"Edwin! Are you facing federal fraud charges?!" another chimed in.

Edwin stood near the garage, wearing a plain gray sweater, staring blankly as workers systematically changed every lock on the mansion's doors and boarded up the broken entrance.

Suddenly, a sleek white Rolls-Royce Phantom glided up the driveway, flanked by two black security SUVs.

The paparazzi went wild, their cameras clicking in a frenzy.

The Rolls-Royce stopped near the iron gates. The rear door opened, and Attorney Wayne stepped out, holding open an umbrella.

Camila stepped out of the vehicle.

She wore a breathtaking cream-colored trench coat over her black suit, looking radiant, composed, and utterly untouchable. The afternoon sun caught the silver brooch on her lapel—a family crest that had belonged to the Stanford family for three generations.

Beverly saw her and immediately rushed forward, her hands clawing at the air. "Camila! Camila, my dear daughter! Please! Tell these people it’s a mistake!"

Two security guards instantly stepped between them, holding Beverly back.

"Camila!" Beverly wept, dropping to her knees on the gravel driveway—the exact same way she had demanded Camila clean the floors for five years. "I was wrong! I was mean to you, I know! But I treated you like a daughter! I gave you a roof over your head!"

Camila walked slowly toward her, stopping just out of reach. She looked down at her former mother-in-law with dark, unreadable eyes.

"You gave me a roof over my head, Beverly?" Camila asked softly, her voice carrying clearly over the sound of flashing cameras. "This roof belonged to my father. The food you ate was bought with my father’s money. The maid service you fired so you could force me to wash your clothes was paid for by my trust."

Camila turned her eyes toward Annika, who hid her face in shame. "And you, Annika. You stole my mother’s vintage emerald ring from my nightstand three months ago and claimed you 'lost' it. I found the pawn shop receipt in your purse yesterday."

Annika gasped, turning away, unable to meet Camila’s gaze.

Finally, Camila walked over to Edwin, who stood beside his impounded Ferrari, looking like a broken shell of a man.

"Camila..." Edwin rasped, his voice dry. "Are you happy now? You destroyed my life. You humiliated my family in front of the entire country."

Camila looked at him, and for a moment, a quiet sadness passed through her eyes—not for him, but for the five years she had wasted believing in a lie.

"I didn't destroy your life, Edwin," Camila said gently. "You destroyed it yourself the moment you mistook my kindness for weakness."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping into a soft, terrible whisper that made Edwin shudder.

"Last night, you told me to crawl under your dog three times if I wanted to say goodbye to my dying father," she said. "You thought power was making someone bow down to you in the dark."

Camila straightened up, looking out over the panoramic view of Los Angeles stretching beneath the Bel Air hills.

"Real power, Edwin," she said, "is knowing who you are, standing tall when the storm hits, and protecting the people you love. You never had it. And you never will."

Two black sedans bearing federal government license plates pulled up behind the Rolls-Royce. Four federal agents stepped out, pulling badges from their jackets.

"Edwin Moretti?" Special Agent Miller announced, stepping forward with pair of silver handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit corporate embezzlement."

Edwin didn't fight. He didn't scream. He simply hung his head as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists.

As the agents led Edwin toward the police cruiser, Beverly screamed hysterically, throwing herself onto the gravel. "Edwin! No! Camila, do something! Save him!"

Camila didn't look back.

She turned calmly, stepped into the quiet luxury of her Rolls-Royce, and instructed the driver: "To the cemetery, please."
