Chapter 6 - THE SUNRISE OVER EAST RIVERThe sun broke brightly over the Manhattan skyline, washing the glass skyscrapers in a warm, golden hue as I stood on the private rooftop terrace of Hayes & Associates, looking out over the East River.

The air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of the suffocating weight that had crushed my chest for seven long years.

My father walked out onto the terrace, handing me a fresh cup of coffee. He stood beside me, leaning his forearms against the glass railing and looking out at the city below.

“Federal marshals just completed the seizure of Sterling Global’s local accounts,” Richard said quietly, blowing on the surface of his coffee. “Your company is officially debt-free, fully recapitalized, and our forensic audit has been adopted by the U.S. Attorney’s office as a textbook model for prosecuting corporate espionage.”

I took a slow sip of the coffee, feeling the warm liquid soothe my throat. I looked down at my hands—hands that no longer shook, hands that had changed ten bank PINs on a cold courtroom bench because a wise father had taught her never to trust a man who smiled while taking half her life.

“You know, Dad,” I said, a soft smile touching my lips, “when you told me to change those PINs outside Courtroom 6B, I thought you were just being paranoid.”

Richard turned his head, looking at me with a rare, tender warmth in his weathered eyes. “A good investigator isn't paranoid, Em. He’s just a man who refuses to be surprised by human greed.”

I laughed—a real, genuine, unburdened laugh that echoed into the morning wind.

“Well,” I said, raising my coffee cup toward the glittering skyline of the city that had tried to break me and instead made me unbreakable. “Here’s to the best $998,000 mistake my ex-husband ever made.”

Richard chuckled, clinking his ceramic mug against mine. “Cheers, Em. Now let’s go run your company.”
