Chapter 4 - The Final Reckoning

The visitor’s room at the Arlington County Federal Detention Center was quiet, cold, and stripped of all comfort.
Richard Williams sat behind the thick security glass, dressed in a coarse gray inmate uniform. His silver hair, usually meticulously styled, was unkempt. The arrogant, imposing posture that had terrified Elena during her childhood was gone, replaced by the slumped, bitter posture of a defeated tyrant.
The heavy steel door clicked open, and Elena walked in.
She wore her service dress uniform, now sporting the four bright silver stars of a full General on her shoulders—her Senate confirmation having passed an emergency vote hours after the hearing by a staggering margin of 94 to 6.
She sat down across from him and picked up the heavy plastic phone receiver.
Richard picked up his side with a trembling, liver-spotted hand.
"Elena," Richard hissed, his voice thick with rage and bitterness. "Look at what you’ve done. You put your own father in prison. You destroyed your brother’s life. Are you proud of yourself?!"
Elena looked at her father through the glass. For thirty years, she had sought his respect. For thirty years, she had bled, worked, and sacrificed, hoping that one day he would look at her and say he was proud.
Now, looking at him, she felt nothing but a distant, quiet pity.
"You destroyed yourself, Dad," Elena said softly. "You used Julian as an illegal cut-out because you thought you were smarter than the system. You tried to sabotage CENTCOM’s network because you wanted Vanguard to profit from the emergency contract. You were willing to put thousands of American soldiers in danger just to prove a point."
"I did it to protect our family’s standing!" Richard shouted into the receiver, his face turning red. "Vanguard was going to make Julian a partner! He was supposed to be the success story! Not you! You were supposed to marry a nice officer, raise a family, and stay out of the way! You stole his future!"
Elena leaned forward, her sharp brown eyes locking onto his with absolute intensity.
"Julian didn't want that future, Dad," Elena revealed calmly. "Julian was terrified of you. He tried to please you until it almost sent him to federal prison for twenty years. But because he cooperated fully with the Department of Justice, he’s received full immunity in exchange for his testimony against you and the board of Vanguard."
Richard gasped, his eyes widening in complete shock. "Julian... testified against me?"
"Julian is starting over," Elena continued. "He’s going back to school. He’s building a real life—one that isn't built on your lies, your favors, or your toxic expectations."
Richard slammed his fist against the plastic shelf beneath the glass. "You think you’re a hero, General?! You’re a monster! You broke this family apart!"
Elena slowly shook her head.
"A family built on cruelty and control isn't a family, Dad," she said softly. "It’s a prison. And today, everyone is walking free except you."

She set the telephone receiver back onto its hook.
Richard began to pound on the glass, shouting soundlessly, his face contorted in rage, but Elena didn't wait to watch. She turned her back on him, smoothed down her uniform coat, and walked down the long concrete hallway out into the bright afternoon sun.
