Chapter 2 - THE PROTECTOR IN BLUE

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, casting long golden light across the estate’s east garden.
Downstairs, the house was quiet. I had instructed the main staff to take the day off, leaving only Elena in the main house.
I stood near the entrance of the kitchen, watching out of sight.
Elena was at the center island, carefully slicing fresh strawberries into a small bowl. She wore her faded blue cleaning uniform, her hair neatly tied back. Sitting on a high stool beside her was Mia.
Mia’s little legs swung back and forth. She was holding a small wooden spoon, watching Elena with intense focus.
"Now, Mia," Elena said in a gentle, warm tone, her voice accented with the soft rhythms of her native Mexico. "When we make the strawberry jam like my grandmother taught me, we must add just a tiny pinch of cinnamon. It's the secret ingredient."
Mia nodded eagerly, reaching her tiny fingers into a small porcelain spice jar, pulling out a pinch of cinnamon, and carefully sprinkling it into the bowl.
Elena smiled—a warm, radiant smile that reached her eyes—and clapped her hands softly. "Perfect! You are a master chef already!"
Mia let out a tiny, breathless giggle.
It was a sound so soft it was almost a whisper, but to me, standing ten feet away in the hallway, it sounded louder than a symphony. Two years of absolute silence broken by warm fruit and a pinch of cinnamon.
I stepped into the kitchen, keeping my tread light so as not to startle them.
The moment my leather shoes clicked against the tile, Elena snapped her head around. She instantly straightened up, pulling her hands back, her expression tightening into anxiety.
"Mr. Vance!" Elena stammered, stepping slightly in front of Mia. "I... I am so sorry. I was just preparing breakfast for Mia. I know I am supposed to stick to the cleaning schedule in the west wing—"
"Elena," I said quietly, raising a hand to stop her.
I walked over to the island, pulled out a stool next to Mia, and sat down. Mia looked up at me. She didn't flinch. She didn't retreat into herself. Instead, she leaned her shoulder gently against my arm, keeping her eyes fixed on mine.
I reached out and gently tucked a lock of hair behind Mia's ear. "Good morning, sweetheart."
Mia offered me a soft nod, then reached out and placed a strawberry slice directly into my hand.
I ate it, looking across the counter at Elena.
"How long have you been a housekeeper, Elena?" I asked.
Elena lowered her eyes, adjusting her yellow gloves. "Four years, Mr. Vance. Ever since my husband passed away in California. I moved to Connecticut to be near my sister. I needed steady work to support my nephew's schooling."
"You have a degree, don't you?" I asked gently.
Elena blinked in surprise, looking up. "How did you...?"
"I reviewed your employment file last night," I said. "Before you came to work for my agency, you were an elementary school teacher in San Diego for nine years, specializing in early childhood development and trauma support."
Elena’s cheeks flushed slightly. She lowered her head. "Yes, sir. But when I relocated, my California teaching credentials didn't transfer immediately to Connecticut. I needed income right away, so I took work with the domestic staffing agency. Miss Valerie... she told me during my interview that I was only hired to clean. She told me specifically never to engage with your daughter."
A cold spike of anger flared in my chest at the mention of Valerie, but I kept my face calm for Mia.
"Valerie does not run this home," I said clearly, making sure Mia heard every word. "I run this home. And effective immediately, Elena, your contract with the cleaning agency is canceled."
Elena’s face turned pale. Her hands began to tremble. "Mr. Vance, please... I need this job. I promise I won't step out of line again—"
"You misunderstand me," I interrupted gently. "I am canceling your agency contract because I am offering you a direct position. I want you to be Mia’s primary personal guardian and developmental specialist. I will triple your current salary, provide full health benefits, and give you complete authority over Mia's daily routine and care."
Elena stared at me in disbelief. "You... you want me?"
"You did in three weeks what twenty high-priced specialists failed to do in two years," I said, looking down at Mia, who was now clutching Elena's blue apron sleeve. "You made my daughter feel safe. That is priceless to me."
Tears well up in Elena’s dark eyes. She looked down at Mia, then back at me. "I would be honored, Mr. Vance. Truly."
Before I could answer, the heavy front double doors of the mansion slammed open with a loud CRACK.
The sharp heel-clicks of Valerie’s designer boots echoed aggressively off the marble foyer floors.
"Julian?!" Valerie’s screeching voice echoed down the corridor. "Julian, where are you?! Why aren't your phones answered?! The caterers for the gala prep are outside, and your security guard at the gate had the audacity to ask for my identification!"

Valerie stormed into the kitchen, holding a tablet and an armful of fashion binders, her face twisted in rage.
Then she saw the three of us sitting together at the kitchen island.
