Chapter 6 - SAFE AT LAST

Two hours later.

The afternoon sun streamed through the large glass windows of the Mercer County CPS administrative headquarters, casting warm, golden light across the waiting room floor.

The heavy oak doors opened.

A social worker walked out, carrying eighteen-month-old Maisie. Right behind her came Dr. Thorne, pushing Jamie in his transport wheelchair.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Jamie yelled, his face lighting up with absolute, unadulterated joy.

Graham sprinted across the room, scooping Maisie into his arms, squeezing her so tightly she let out a delighted, bubbly giggle. He buried his face into her neck, crying happy, cleansing tears that washed away three days of unimaginable agony.

I dropped to my knees in front of Jamie’s wheelchair.

I didn't care about the reporters outside. I didn't care about the lawsuits Arthur Vance was already preparing against the hospital and the state. I didn't care about the long road of medical management that lay ahead of us.

All that mattered was the little boy sitting in front of me.

"Hi, Mommy," Jamie smiled, reaching out his small, uninjured hand to gently pat my cheek. "Are we going to get pancakes now?"

I let out a loud, tearful laugh, wrapping my arms around his shoulders, holding him close against my heart, feeling his warm breath against my neck.

"Yes, baby," I sobbed happily, kissing his hair, his forehead, his cheeks over and over again. "We are going to get all the pancakes in the world."

Jamie reached down and picked up a small blue plastic toy car from his lap, rolling it along the padded armrest of his wheelchair.

"Mommy?" he asked innocently.

"Yes, my sweet boy?"

"Why did the lady in the court say I'm special?"

I sat back on my heels, looking into my son's bright, beautiful, hazel eyes. I took his hand in mine, holding it gently, knowing that from this day forward, Graham and I would be his shield, his guard, and his pain-reflex for the rest of his life.

"Because you are special, Jamie," I said softly, smiling through my tears. "You are our brave little boy. And Mommy and Daddy are never, ever going to let anything hurt you again."

Graham knelt down beside us, holding Maisie against his chest, wrapping his big arm around both of us, pulling our family into a tight, unbreakable circle.

May you like

Together, as the afternoon sun warmed our backs, we walked out of the building, out into the bright, beautiful world, heading home where we belonged.

THE END
