Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Empress

The heavy footsteps of six uniformed officers from the Federal Police Special Investigation Unit echoed up the marble staircase of the mansion.
Leading them was Dr. Valenzuela—Alejandro’s chief legal counsel—alongside the Senior Prosecutor for Child Protection Services in Mexico City.
Estefanía scrambled back onto her feet, backing against the wall, her eyes wild with panic as the police officers flooded the master study.
"Estefanía Villarreal," Prosecutor Valadez announced sternly, pulling an official federal warrant from his coat. "You are under arrest for severe child abuse, intentional poisoning, fraud, extortion, and criminal conspiracy."
"No! You can't arrest me!" Estefanía screamed, thrashing wildly as two female officers grabbed her wrists, forcing her hands behind her back. "I am a Villarreal! My father is Senator Alvarez! You will lose your jobs for this! Alejandro, tell them to stop! Tell them!"
Alejandro stood up slowly behind his desk. He didn't look angry. He looked like an executioner delivering a final verdict.
"Your father's Senator office was raided by federal agents thirty minutes ago, Estefanía," Alejandro revealed coldly. "When Mateo’s team decrypted your private server, they found wire transfers linking your family's real estate firm to illegal money laundering through Swiss accounts. Your father isn't going to save you. He's going to be sharing a cell block with you."
Estefanía froze. The final thread of her arrogant high-society protection snapped in half. Her face turned ghost-white, her mouth hanging open in complete, horrifying shock.
CLACK.
The heavy steel handcuffs snapped shut over her manicured wrists.
"As for you, Peralta," Prosecutor Valadez added, pointing at the shivering doctor. "Your medical license is permanently revoked, and you are being charged as an accessory to attempted murder of a minor."
Dr. Peralta sank into his seat, weeping softly, offering no resistance as the officers hauled him out of the room.
Estefanía thrashed against the officers' grips as they dragged her down the grand hallway toward the staircase. "Alejandro! Please! I love you! I did it for us! Don't do this to me! Alejandro!"
Her hysterical screams echoed off the high marble ceilings of the mansion, growing fainter and fainter as she was pulled out through the grand front doors into the pouring rain, where three police cruisers stood with their red and blue lights flashing against the dark night sky.
The entire household staff—cooks, gardeners, maids, and drivers—stood in the foyer, watching in silent, triumphant satisfaction as the cruel mistress who had terrorized them and hurt little Renata was shoved into the back of a police van like a common criminal.
In the study, complete silence returned.
Alejandro walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the police cruisers drive down the curved driveway and disappear through the iron gates into the storm.
Dr. Valenzuela stepped up beside him, holding a thick leather folder.
"The emergency court order has been signed, Alejandro," the attorney reported smoothly. "Estefanía’s parental rights—and any claim she had to your estate or the Villarreal trust—have been permanently severed by the judge. She will be facing up to twenty-five years in federal prison."
"Make it thirty," Alejandro whispered, his eyes cold. "Use every peso of my estate to ensure she never sees the outside of a cell again."
"Consider it done," Valenzuela nodded, bowing respectfully before leaving the room.
Alejandro turned and walked out of the study, heading down the silent, peaceful corridor toward the nursery wing at the end of the hall.
He pushed the door open gently.
The nursery was bathed in the warm, soft glow of a small nightlight shaped like a sleeping moon.
Doña Lupita was sitting in a rocking chair near the bed, softly humming an old lullaby.
Inside the bed, wrapped in a fluffy pink blanket, was Renata.
Her stomach was full. Her face was clean. The terrifying green drink was gone forever, replaced by a warm mug of chamomile tea resting on the nightstand.
When the door creaked, Renata’s eyes opened softly.
"Daddy?" she whispered.
Alejandro felt his heart melt. He walked across the room, sitting down on the edge of her small bed, slipping his hand into her tiny fingers.
"I'm here, my sweet star," Alejandro whispered, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead. Her skin was warm. The cold, sickly sweat was entirely gone. "The bad people are gone. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you on my life."
Renata looked up at him, her big dark eyes reflecting the warm light of the nightlight.
"Is Mommy Estefanía gone?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, sweetheart," Alejandro answered gently. "She's gone far away. And she's never, ever coming back."
Renata let out a long, quiet sigh—a breath of absolute, profound relief that seemed to release months of trapped fear from her little body.
She reached up with her tiny arms, wrapping them around Alejandro’s neck, pulling his face down against her cheek.

"I love you, Daddy," she murmured softly, her eyelids growing heavy.
Alejandro wrapped his powerful arms around his daughter, holding her close to his heart, feeling her steady, peaceful breathing against his chest as the storm outside slowly faded into the quiet night.
