Chapter 2 - Safe House and Stolen Data

The humidity of North Carolina hit Brooke like a physical wall as they stepped off the jet bridge. Charlotte Douglas Airport was buzzing with evening travelers, but the atmosphere around Brooke and Reid felt charged with invisible tripwires.

"Keep Lily close, walk steadily, and don't look at anyone holding a tablet," Reid instructed quietly as he took the heavy diaper bag from her shoulder, slipping it easily over his own.

They bypassed the main baggage claim. Reid led her through a side exit toward the lower-level commercial transportation zone, where an unbranded dark gray SUV was waiting in a shaded parking bay. The driver, a tall woman in her fifties with short silver hair and a sharp, non-nonsense posture, stepped out and opened the door.

"You're late, Reid," the woman said, her eyes quickly sweeping the pavement behind them before settling on Brooke and Lily. "And you brought company."

"Brooke, this is Martha," Reid said, helping Brooke slide into the leather back seat. "Martha spent twenty years with the Treasury Department before deciding private security was better for her blood pressure. Martha, this is Brooke Ellery. And her daughter, Lily. She's Trevor Madsen’s wife."

Martha stopped mid-stride, her sharp eyes widening slightly. She closed the SUV door with a firm thud, hopped into the driver's seat, and pulled out into airport traffic before speaking again. "Madsen? The junior golden boy? Reid, tell me you didn't pull a civilian into this firestorm."

"She was already in the firestorm, Martha," Reid said from the front passenger seat. "Madsen drained her personal accounts at dawn, locked her out, and used her name on the offshore liability waivers."

Martha glanced in her rearview mirror, her stern expression softening into one of deep empathy as she saw Brooke clutching Lily. "That bastard. I've read his corporate bio. Full of words like 'integrity' and 'family values.' Don't worry, honey. You're in the safest vehicle in the state right now."

They drove thirty miles north, leaving the glittering skyline of Charlotte behind for the dense, pine-forested backroads of Lake Norman. The destination was a secluded brick home tucked at the end of a private road, surrounded by thick woods and high wooden fencing. Security cameras gleamed discreetly from the eaves.

Inside, the house was sparse, warm, and remarkably secure. Heavy blackout curtains covered the windows, and a central workspace in the living room was dominated by three high-end monitors, encrypted laptops, and stacks of neatly organized paper files.

Brooke set Lily down on a plush area rug, laying out a few toys Martha had surprisingly produced from a side closet. As Lily babbled happily, blissfully unaware of the storm around her, Reid opened a sleek black hard-shell case and powered on his primary terminal.

"Brooke, I need you to think back," Reid said, pulling up a secure browser interface. "Every document Trevor had you sign over the last year. Did any of them involve a entity called Aegis Holdings or Larkspur Capital?"

Brooke sat down at the table, rubbing her temples as she forced her exhausted mind to rewind through months of casual kitchen-counter conversations. "Larkspur... yes. About three months ago. Trevor brought home a thick packet. He said it was an internal real estate trust for senior executives' families. He told me it was an insurance policy for Lily's college fund. I signed three separate signature pages."

Reid’s fingers flew across his keyboard, the soft clicking of the mechanical keys filling the quiet room. "Larkspur Capital isn't a trust. It’s a primary pass-through shell company Vane-Madsen uses to convert stolen corporate funds into legitimate real estate holdings. When you signed those documents, he didn't name you as a beneficiary. He named you as the sole managing officer."

Brooke gasped, her blood running cold. "What? Why would he do that?"

"Because when the IRS or the Department of Justice eventually investigates Larkspur’s illegal tax write-offs, the paper trail stops at the sole managing officer," Reid explained, his voice grim. "If Vane-Madsen went down, Trevor was set up to walk away clean while you took the criminal liability. He was setting you up to take the fall for millions of dollars in corporate fraud."

Brooke sank back into her chair, a dizzying nausea rolling through her. "He didn't just stop loving me. He was setting me up to go to prison so he could start a new life with Julianna Vane."

"He thought you were helpless," Reid said, leaning across the desk and looking straight into her eyes, his tone fierce and unwavering. "He thought you were just a quiet girl from Dallas who would panic, hide in your sister’s apartment, and cry while he manipulated the court system. He didn't account for the fact that you have the signature authority to unlock Larkspur’s internal banking records."

Brooke looked up, the shock in her eyes hardening into pure, unadulterated resolve. "What do I need to do?"

"Because you are legally listed as the managing officer of Larkspur Capital, you have the absolute legal right to request an immediate, unredacted corporate audit and frozen-asset transfer," Reid said, a slow, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Trevor built a trap for you, Brooke. But he handed you the remote control."

Before Brooke could answer, Martha stepped into the room holding a secure tablet. Her face was pale.

"Reid, we've got a problem," Martha said quietly. "Trevor Madsen just filed an emergency ex-parte motion in Dallas County Court. He's claiming you abandoned your daughter, stole corporate documents, and fled the state. He's requesting full emergency custody of Lily and a federal warrant for your arrest."
