Chapter 2 - The House Built on DeceitThe silence following the police cruisers’ departure didn't last long. By nightfall, the high-society circles of Savannah were alight with rumors.

In Daniel Mercer’s conference room the following morning, the table was covered with certified mortgage filings, shell-company disclosures, and bank statements. Daniel slid a manila folder toward me.

"Your parents didn't just overstep, Amelia," Daniel said. "They committed grand-scale bank and contract fraud."

I opened the folder. Inside was a copy of the formal marriage settlement between Brianna Voss and Julian Sterling. Attached to it was an unauthorized property deed assignment granting the Gaston Street mansion to the Sterling Family Trust as collateral for a $1.2 million pre-marital business line of credit.

"Celeste forged your signature," Daniel explained, pointing to the notary line. "She used an old revoked power-of-attorney clause from Raymond's failed development firm, along with an accomplice notary public who has already had her license suspended this morning."

Before I could reply, Daniel’s office door swung open. Julian Sterling stood in the threshold, accompanied by his father, Arthur Sterling—a man whose real estate empire cast a long shadow across the entire state of Georgia. Julian looked rattled, while his father’s expression was calculated and icy.

"Mr. Mercer," Arthur Sterling said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "Ms. Voss. We need to clear the air."

"You're trespassing on a private legal consultation, Arthur," Daniel warned, remaining seated.

"I’m protecting my family’s balance sheet," Arthur countered, pulling a chair out and looking directly at me. "Your sister and your parents convinced my son that the Gaston Street estate was an unencumbered heirloom being passed down to Brianna as a dowry gift. Julian advanced them three hundred thousand dollars for wedding reservations, designer dresses, and catering retainers."

Julian stepped forward, looking down at his shoes. "Amelia... Brianna told me you were just handling the property taxes because your parents were older. She swore the house was theirs."

"My mother and sister lied to you, Julian," I said steadily. "Just as they lied to the entire city. I bought this property outright two years ago to keep them out of foreclosure. They own nothing. And when I refused to sign away my legal rights, my mother tortured my four-year-old child in the sun to try and break me."

Arthur turned to his son with barely contained disdain. "You tied our family name to common grifters and child abusers. The wedding is off."

Julian looked at me, desperate. "Can't we settle this quietly, Amelia? If you honor the collateral, we can cover the damages, keep the press out of it—"

"Get out," I said, cutting him off mid-sentence. "My son is sitting in a hospital room with bandaged knees. If you want your three hundred thousand dollars back, get in line behind the District Attorney."

Arthur Sterling gave a short nod of grim respect, grabbed his son by the arm, and walked out. The Voss family’s golden ticket had vanished.
