Chapter 3 - The AuditBy Monday, Diane Sterling’s team of forensic accountants had spent seventy-two straight hours dissecting the financial records that Richard had been forced to surrender under the court order. I sat in Diane’s office once again, this time without the overwhelming fear that had consumed me during our first meeting. The atmosphere was focused, clinical, and deadly.

Diane threw a thick stack of spreadsheets onto the table. "It’s worse than we thought, Arthur. Richard didn't just mismanage the trust. He systematically bled it."

My breath caught. "What do you mean?"

"The trust fund you established was capitalized with $1.5 million in blue-chip stocks and cash reserves," Diane explained, looking at me with genuine sympathy beneath her professional exterior. "Over the last twenty-four months, Richard made forty-two separate withdrawals. He classified them as 'Madison’s living expenses,' 'childcare preparations,' and 'administrative fees.' But when we cross-referenced the destination accounts, the money didn't go to Madison."

She pulled out a targeted document, highlighted in bright yellow. "Nearly $180,000 was transferred directly to an offshore tuition payment system for Lauren’s private university. Another $250,000 was used to pay off the secondary mortgage on their primary home. And a recurring monthly transfer of $4,000 was being deposited directly into Lauren’s personal checking account for 'discretionary spending.'"

I covered my mouth, tears stinging my eyes. "They told me the trust was empty because of the economy. They told me I had to live off $500 a month because I was being greedy."

"They lied to you, Madison," Diane said firmly. "While you were skipping meals to ensure you could afford diapers, your sister was using your son's future to buy designer clothes and fund weekend trips to Cabo. Your father committed grand larceny and breach of fiduciary trust under the color of authority."

Grandfather’s face was unreadable, a mask of pure judicial granite. "Can we pursue criminal charges, Diane?"

"Absolutely," Diane nodded. "The state attorney’s office would take this case in a heartbeat based on this forensic trail alone. But more importantly for Madison, we have grounds for an immediate, permanent removal of Richard as trustee, a full restoration of the stolen funds from his personal assets, and a permanent protective order ensuring neither Richard, your mother, nor Lauren can come within five hundred feet of Madison or Noah."

"File the criminal referral," Grandfather said without a single moment of hesitation.

"Wait," I said, my voice shaking but clear.

Both Grandfather and Diane looked at me.

"I want them to see me in court first," I said, holding Noah tighter against my chest. "I want them to sit in that room, under oath, and explain to a judge why my son didn't deserve formula while Lauren deserved a $4,000 allowance. I want them to have to look at the daughter they spent years trying to make invisible."

Grandfather looked at me for a long time, the corners of his mouth twitching upward in a rare, proud smile. "The court date is tomorrow morning, Madison. You will have your stage."
