Chapter 4 - Terms of Surrender

Ethan snatched the folder from the table as if it were a life preserver thrown to a drowning man. His eyes scanned the legal terms rapidly, his breathing jagged and shallow. Patricia hovered over his shoulder, her eyes darting across the pages.

"What... what is this?" Ethan stammered.

"Those are the terms under which I will refrain from liquidating Carter Logistics today," I stated, leaning back against the edge of the conference table.

"Read them aloud, Ethan," Patricia demanded, her voice trembling. "Read them!"

Ethan’s voice shook as he read from the first page. "Section One... The Bennett Grand Hotel Corporation will convert the $12.4 million debt into a fifty-one percent controlling equity stake in Carter Logistics..."

"Fifty-one percent?!" Patricia gasped, stepping back as if slapped. "That gives you majority ownership! That gives you control of our board!"

"Keep reading," I said coldly.

Ethan swallowed hard, his face turning ghostly pale as he moved to the next paragraph. "Section Two... Ethan Carter will immediately resign from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Carter Logistics. He will be demoted to Vice President of Regional Operations, reporting directly to a Managing Director appointed by Madison Bennett..."

"No!" Patricia screamed, slamming her fist onto the glass table. "Absurd! You are stripping my son of the company his father built! I will not allow it!"

"Your husband built a respectable logistics firm, Patricia," I corrected her with razor-sharp precision. "Your son turned it into a speculative nightmare to fund your absurd lifestyle. If I liquidate the company today at auction, Carter Logistics ceases to exist by noon. Ethan will be personally liable for the outstanding director guarantees, which means your house, your cars, and your personal assets will be seized by federal court marshals within thirty days."

Patricia staggered backward, her hand flying to her chest. She looked at Arthur Pendelton, seeking any sign of bluffing, but the senior attorney merely offered her a cold, unblinking stare.

"And what about me?" Patricia whispered, her voice breaking. "What happens to my position on the board?"

"Section Four," Ethan read in a hollow, lifeless tone, staring at the paper. "Patricia Carter will immediately and permanently resign from all board seats, advisory roles, and executive committees within Carter Logistics and its subsidiaries. She will be barred from entering corporate facilities without written authorization from the Chairwoman."

"You're banning me from my own family's company?!" Patricia choked out, tears of humiliation finally spilling over her mascara. "You vindictive little snake!"

"I am removing an uncompensated, liability-inducing distraction from a company I now own," I replied without a trace of pity. "You spent three years telling me I was just a housewife who belonged in the background, Patricia. Now, you get to experience what it feels like to have zero power over business decisions."

"And the marriage?" Ethan asked, his eyes desperate as he looked up at me from the paperwork. "Maddy... what about us? If I sign this... if I give you control of the company... do we stay together? Can we fix this?"

I looked at him, feeling a wave of absolute pity. He still thought this was a negotiation about his feelings. He still thought he could use romance to soften a corporate execution.

"Arthur," I gestured to my attorney.

Arthur pulled a final white envelope from his coat pocket and placed it gently in front of Ethan.

"These are uncontested divorce papers, Ethan," I said gently. "They stipulate that you forfeit all claims to any assets owned by the Bennett family, including the Bennett Grand Hotel. In exchange, I will refrain from pursuing personal civil fraud charges against you for the falsified revenue reports your firm submitted to the credit rating agencies last autumn."

Ethan gasped. "How... how did you find out about those?"

"My grandmother has owned your lead accounting firm for six months, Ethan," I revealed with a subtle smile. "She knew every single dirty secret your company possessed before she even invited us to dinner last night."

Ethan dropped the pen he was holding. He looked at the restructuring agreement, then at the divorce papers, then at his sobbing mother, who was now huddled in the corner of the room, completely shattered.

He realized he had no moves left. The board was clear. The trap had closed.

"If I don't sign..." Ethan whispered, "I go to prison, don't I?"

"The District Attorney’s financial crimes division receives our audit report at 1:00 PM if these documents aren't executed," Arthur Pendelton noted helpfully, checking his silver pocket watch. "It is currently 9:15 AM."

Ethan sat in absolute silence for two long minutes. The ticking of the wall clock seemed to amplify with every passing second.

Slowly, with a hand that shook so violently he could barely hold the pen, Ethan signed the restructuring agreement. Then, he turned to the second document, turned to the final page, and signed his name to the divorce petition.

He pushed the papers across the table toward me.

"It's done," Ethan whispered, his head hanging low. "You took everything."

I picked up the signed documents, checking every signature with a professional eye before handing them to Arthur.

"I didn't take anything from you, Ethan," I said, standing up and looking down at him one last time. "You traded your family's legacy for quick cash, and you traded your wife for a chance at power. You got exactly what you bargained for."

I turned to the two security guards standing at the door.

"Escort Mr. Carter and Mrs. Carter out of the building through the service exit," I instructed calmly. "Their presence is no longer required."
