Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

The fall of Hale Enterprises was swift, but wounded animals always bite back before they bleed out.

Three days after Vivian’s arrest, the tabloids exploded.

“SECRET HEIR OR COLD-BLOODED MANIPULATOR? THE TRUTH ABOUT EMMA MERCER.”

Daniel had run to every bargain-bin gossip magazine and trashy news outlet that would listen to him. He portrayed himself as a loving, hardworking husband who had been victimized by a billionaire family. He claimed that I had hidden my identity to trap him, that I was mentally unstable after childbirth, and that the Mercers were using their vast wealth to steal his innocent newborn daughter from him.

An edited audio recording was leaked online—a clip where I sounded cold and detached, saying, "You will never see Lily again, Daniel."

The internet exploded. Social media tore me apart. Commentators called me a "heartless elite" who used my power to destroy a middle-class family.

Inside the Mercer library, I sat with a cup of tea, watching a news broadcast covering the "Hale vs. Mercer Scandal."

My father walked in, looking furious. “Arthur has already filed six defamation lawsuits. We can have every video taken down by midnight.”

“No,” I said calmly, setting my tea down. “Taking it down makes us look guilty. It makes it look like we have something to hide.”

“Emma, they are dragging your name through the mud,” Alexander said, his voice laced with protective pain. “They’re questioning your ability to be a mother.”

“Let them,” I replied, a small, confident smile touching my lips. “Daniel thinks he’s playing a game of public sympathy. He forgot that the truth doesn’t need a publicist—it just needs an audience.”

I stood up, walking toward the large mahogany desk. “Call a live press conference for tomorrow morning at the Mercer Grand Ballroom. Invite every major news network, every tabloid journalist, and every social media streamer who ran Daniel’s story.”

“And what are we giving them?” Arthur asked, entering the room with a legal notepad.

“The unedited truth,” I said. “And a front-row seat to Daniel Hale’s complete undoing.”

The next morning, the Mercer Grand Ballroom was packed with over two hundred journalists, flashing camera lights, and rolling broadcast feeds. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation.

I stepped onto the stage alone. I wore a simple, elegant dark green dress. No heavy jewelry. No dramatic entourage. Just me.

A barrage of hostile questions immediately erupted.

“Miss Mercer! Did you lie about your identity to trap Daniel Hale?”

“Is it true you’re keeping a father away from his child out of spite?”

“Why did you bankrupt his family business over a domestic dispute?”

I stood behind the podium, waiting patiently until the noise died down. The silence stretched for ten long seconds, commanding the room.

“Four days ago,” I began, my voice clear and resonating through the microphones, “I gave birth to my daughter, Lily. During her delivery, my heart stopped twice. I spent three days fighting for my life in the ICU.”

The room began to quiet down.

“My husband, Daniel Hale, did not visit me once,” I continued, looking directly into the main broadcast camera. “He answered the hospital’s calls only to ask when I would be discharged so I could clean his house for an investor dinner.”

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

“Daniel claims I manipulated him. He claims my family used our wealth to bully him. He released an audio clip showing my coldness.” I paused, taking a slow breath. “Now, I would like to release the full video.”

I pressed a remote on the podium.

The massive LED screens behind me flickered to life.

The high-definition video from the Hale estate foyer played in crisp, horrifying clarity. The entire ballroom watched as I staggered through the door, clutching a newborn, barely able to walk. They heard Vivian’s cruel sneer: “You’ve rested enough... Clean the kitchen.”

They watched in absolute horror as Vivian lifted the heavy bucket and dumped filthy, gray mop water over my bare, bleeding feet.

And then, the screen zoomed in on Daniel Hale. Sitting on the stairs. Watching me gasp in agony. Checking his watch. Saying cold-heartedly: “Don’t embarrass me.”

The ballroom went dead silent. You could hear the sharp gasps of journalists in the front row. Several female reporters covered their mouths in utter shock.

“I didn't leave Daniel because I was rich,” I said, my voice trembling slightly with raw, powerful emotion. “I left him because I realized that if I stayed, my daughter would grow up believing that a woman’s pain is invisible. That abuse is love. I am a Mercer, yes. But above all, I am a mother.”

I clicked the remote again, turning off the screen.

“The legal actions taken against Hale Enterprises were not out of spite. They were the consequence of financial fraud, breach of contract, and systemic abuse. Every dollar recovered from the liquidation of Hale Enterprises will be donated directly to the National Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence.”

I stood tall, looking out at the stunned crowd.

“No more questions.”

I walked off the stage. Behind me, the room erupted—not into hostile shouting, but into a deafening roar of flashing cameras and immediate, unanimous support.

By noon, Daniel Hale was no longer a victim. He was the most hated man in the country.
