Chapter 3 - The Liquidation of Montgomery Financial

Within forty minutes, the grand foyer of the Montgomery residence was repurposed into a fully operational field office for the Vance family legal team.

Two additional armored vehicles arrived at the estate, bringing four forensic auditors and a private medical transport unit equipped with a mobile stretcher and emergency plasma supplies.

I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair near the hearth, wrapped in warm wool blankets, receiving a slow IV saline drip while Maya slept peacefully in a temperature-controlled portable bassinet beside me. Uncle Victor stood beside my chair, a glass of dark amber scotch held loosely in his hand, watching silently as his team dismantled Ethan’s empire piece by piece.

In the center of the room, Ethan and Diane sat on two wooden dining chairs, flanked by three armed Vance security officers.

Ethan’s personal phone was vibrating continuously against the stone floor. The screen flashed relentlessly with incoming calls from board members, senior partners, and institutional investors.

"Answer it," Evelyn Vance directed, placing her high-end laptop on the kitchen island. "Enable the speaker function."

Ethan’s hands shook so violently he almost dropped the device twice before pressing the icon.

"Ethan?!" a frantic, screaming voice erupted from the tiny speaker. "What in the hell is happening down there?! Vance Logistics just executed a total revocation of their thirty-million-dollar liquidity bridge! The state banking authority just slapped a freeze on our primary clearing accounts! Our stock valuation just collapsed seventy percent in off-hours trading!"

"Marcus..." Ethan stammered, wiping a sheet of cold sweat from his neck. "Marcus, listen to me... there has been an administrative issue with the Vance account—"

"An issue?!" the partner bellowed. "The United States Attorney’s Office just served federal search warrants on our headquarters in downtown Chicago! They’re seizing our primary servers! They claim we’ve been running fraudulent insurance riders on high-net-worth accounts for three years! If those accounts don't settle by 8:00 AM, the bank goes into receivership! You've ruined us, Ethan! We are completely ruined!"

The line dead-ended with a harsh electronic tone.

Diane let out a choked scream, burying her face in her manicured hands. "Our firm... our beautiful family firm... thirty years of labor..."

"Thirty years of systematic financial criminality," Evelyn Vance corrected flatly without breaking her typing cadence. "Our auditors have spent twenty minutes reviewing your internal ledgers, Mrs. Montgomery. It appears your late husband established Montgomery Financial on a foundation of predatory loan structures, shell corporate transfers, and illegal insurance leverage."

Evelyn turned her laptop screen toward Ethan.

"And you expanded those practices," she noted. "Four months ago, you secured a three-million-dollar private loan from an unaccredited lender in Miami using this residence as collateral. You forged Claire’s signature on the spousal consent documents to circumvent state property disclosure laws."

Ethan stared at the financial charts, his eyes bloodshot and wide with terror. "I... I was going to cover it! The Vance Capital deal was going to generate twelve million in advisory fees... I simply required more time!"

"You didn't require time," I called out from my armchair, my voice firm and clear. "You required my death."

Ethan looked across the room at me, a pathetic, frantic desperation filling his eyes. "Claire... sweetheart... please. You know how much I love you. I was under unbearable pressure from Mom... from the board! She was the one who insisted on the insurance rider! She said we needed an emergency hedge if the merger stalled!"

"Ethan!" Diane screeched, turning on her son with sudden, vicious fury. "How dare you lay your crimes at my feet! I built your entire career! I sacrificed everything for you!"

"You ruined me!" Ethan screamed back, standing up from his chair, his face contorted in rage. "You despised her from the start! You insisted she was a nobody! You forced me to keep her isolated so she wouldn't start auditing the household accounts!"

"ENOUGH!" Victor Vance’s voice thundered through the foyer, silencing both of them instantly.

Ethan and Diane shrank back into their seats, trembling under Victor’s cold glare.

Victor took a calm sip of his scotch and glanced at Evelyn. "Is the transport team ready?"

"Yes, sir," Evelyn confirmed. "The private suite at Northwestern Memorial has been secured. The head of trauma surgery is standing by to inspect Claire’s sutures and perform a comprehensive forensic medical examination."

"Excellent," Victor said. He walked over to my chair, placing a gentle, reassuring hand on my shoulder. "It is time to leave, Claire. You and Maya have no further business in this house."

"Wait!" Ethan yelled, attempting to rush toward us, only to be instantly pinned against his chair by two security guards. "Claire, please! You can't walk out like this! If you leave, I lose everything! They will arrest me!"

I looked at Ethan—the man who had watched his mother pour bleach water over my bleeding body, the man who had stood by while I nearly died on his floor, the man who had traded my life for a corporate promotion.

I reached down and lifted Maya into my arms, holding her close as the medical attendants helped me to my feet.

"You didn't care when I was losing my life four days ago, Ethan," I said softly, my voice completely devoid of hatred, leaving only ice. "You told me to stop playing the victim. Now... you can play it yourself."

May you like

I turned away from him, walking through the arched glass doors into the cool, cleansing rain, flanked by my uncle and his team.

Behind us, the distant, rising wail of law enforcement sirens began to echo through the night.
