As it turned out, the forty million in Apex Holdings was only the tip of the iceberg. Alex had been systematically draining his father’s construction supply company through inflated subcontractor invoices—subcontractors that didn't exist, owned by shell corporations managed by his mother in Florida.
Grace and Fern were indicted on federal wire fraud and tax evasion charges within ten days of the raid. Their designer clothes, luxury cars, and Palm Beach condo were seized by the federal government to satisfy back taxes and restitution claims. Fern was forced to drop out of her exclusive social club and move into a modest studio apartment, while Grace spent her seventy-second birthday in a holding cell waiting for bail hearing arguments that her high-priced defense attorneys were losing one by one.
Alex didn't even try to fight the divorce.
