Chapter 4 - The Fall of Victoria

The corporate headquarters of Vale Development was a thirty-story glass tower in the heart of the financial district.

At 3:45 p.m., the thirty-second-floor executive boardroom was filled with twelve of the city's most powerful real estate investors, corporate bank representatives, and senior partners.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Victoria Vale.

She was wearing a black Chanel suit, her silver hair styled into an immaculate chignon, her fingers twitching slightly against her pearl necklace. She was trying desperately to maintain her icy, aristocratic posture, but the sweat glittering at her temples betrayed her.

When the heavy frosted glass doors swung open, Ethan stumbled in, his linen shirt wrinkled, his hair disheveled, followed closely by Chloe, who looked terrified.

"Ethan!" Victoria stood up, her voice sharp. "Where have you been?! What is the meaning of these legal notices?!"

"Mother..." Ethan choked out, sinking into the nearest chair. "She took the shares. She took the house. She took everything."

"Nonsense!" Victoria snapped, turning her furious glare toward the doorway as I walked in, followed by Marcus Vance and two junior associates carrying thick stacks of bound evidence books. "Clara! Stop this embarrassing circus right now! You are making a public spectacle of this family!"

"This family made a spectacle of itself when it traded a baby's life for a Cabo social media post, Victoria," I said, sitting down calmly at the head of the table opposite her.

"You have no standing here!" Victoria spat, leaning across the table. "You are an unemployed mother! You don't know the first thing about real estate development or corporate governance!"

Marcus Vance set a leather evidence binder in front of every single board member.

CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy binders opened in unison.

"Gentlemen of the board," Marcus announced, his voice ringing through the silent room. "If you turn to Tab 3, you will see the forensic accounting audit performed on Vale Development over the last forty-eight hours."

The board members began flipping through the pages. Whispers instantly broke out across the table.

"What is this?" the lead investor, a stern man named Arthur Pendelton, asked, his brows drawing together into a fierce scowl. "Two point four million dollars transferred from the escrow account to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands?"

Victoria’s face drained of every ounce of color. She gripped the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned white. "That... that was an offshore land acquisition project!"

"No, Victoria," I said, leaning forward, resting my chin on my laced fingers. "That was the money you used to pay off Ethan’s gambling debts from his trips to Macau last year. You falsified the quarterly earnings reports to cover his tracks, and you used Chloe’s shell company as the routing agent."

Chloe let out a small, terrified squeak and dropped her head into her hands.

"You audited the offshore accounts?" Victoria whispered, her voice finally breaking into a pathetic, breathless rasp.

"I wrote the audit protocols for the State Department six years ago, Victoria," I replied cold. "Did you really think I wouldn't see a basic wire fraud transfer?"

Arthur Pendelton slammed his binder shut, the noise sounding like a gunshot in the room. He turned to the other board members, his face dark with rage.

"This is criminal fraud," Pendelton stated. "If the Securities and Exchange Commission sees this, the entire firm will be delisted by morning."

"Unless," Marcus interjected smoothly, sliding a fresh set of documents to Pendelton, "you execute an immediate corporate vote to remove Ethan Vale and Victoria Vale from all executive positions, strip their equity, and appoint Clara Vale as sole Managing Trustee until the financial restitution is completed."

Ethan jumped out of his chair. "You can't do that! That's my father's company!"

"Your father built this company on honor, Ethan," Pendelton said, looking at him with utter disgust. "You built it on luxury trips, neglected children, and stolen money. Security!"

Two tall corporate security guards stepped into the room.

"Remove Ethan Vale, Victoria Vale, and Chloe Brooks from the premises immediately," Pendelton ordered. "And call the District Attorney’s office."
