Chapter 2 - The Audit Unravels

The digital projector hummed softly, casting a stark white light over Grant Mercer’s pale, sweat-slicked face.

"This is impossible," Grant stammered, his confident posture collapsing into a frantic scramble through his leather folder. "This... this is an ambush! Arthur! Where is Arthur?!"

The side door of the boardroom opened. Arthur Vance stepped into the room, holding a warm cup of coffee. He didn't look at Grant. He walked straight to the window, leaned against the sill, and crossed his arms.

"I am right here, Grant," Arthur said softly. "And I am listening to my Regional Director."

Evelyn clicked the remote. A chart flashed onto the screen, glowing with red highlighted line items that looked like open wounds across Mercer & Vance’s balance sheet.

"Over the past eighteen months," Evelyn began, her tone as clinical as a surgeon dissecting a specimen, "the Chief Operating Officer, Grant Mercer, has authorized forty-two separate wire transfers to a shell entity registered in Delaware under the name CV Capital Holdings."

Grant’s eyes widened in horror. "Evelyn... wait—"

"The total amount transferred," Evelyn continued, ignoring him completely, "is two point seven million dollars. CV Capital Holdings has no employees, no physical office, and no operational assets. What it does have is a sole corporate officer."

She clicked the remote again.

A scanned copy of a Delaware corporate registration form appeared on the wall. The signature at the bottom was clear, bold, and unmistakable: Vanessa Cole.

A collective gasp went through the independent board members sitting along the table.

"Two point seven million dollars of corporate logistics development funds," Evelyn said, turning her icy gaze to Grant, "routed into the personal bank accounts of your mistress under the guise of 'consulting fees.' Fees that coincided precisely with her purchase of a luxury condo in Gold Coast, three sports cars, and a series of wire transfers to offshore gambling accounts in Macao."

"That was... those were legitimate advisory services!" Grant yelled, standing up so fast his leather chair slid back into the glass wall with a loud bang. "Vanessa was consulting on our luxury retail expansion!"

"Vanessa Cole has an associate degree in fashion merchandising and was working as a junior receptionist at a day spa when you met her, Grant," Evelyn replied coldly. "Her 'advisory services' consisted of accompanying you on twelve unauthorized corporate jet trips to Miami, Paris, and Aspen, all billed to Mercer & Vance as 'client acquisition expenses.'"

Marian slammed her palms on the table. "This is personal spite! You are using corporate machinery to attack my son because he chose to help a injured, vulnerable woman!"

Evelyn finally looked at Marian. The look was so sharp, so devoid of warmth, that Marian instinctively flinched.

"Marian," Evelyn said quietly. "Let us talk about your contributions to this company."

Evelyn clicked the remote again.

A new spreadsheet appeared.

"As a non-executive director, Marian Mercer receives an annual honorarium of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. However, over the past three years, Marian has submitted expense reports totaling six hundred and eighty thousand dollars for 'charitable outreach and shareholder relations.'"

Evelyn pointed to a series of scanned receipts on the screen.

"These expenses include: a forty-thousand-dollar mink coat from Neiman Marcus, four private yacht charters in Naples, Florida, and twenty-eight thousand dollars for personal cosmetic procedures in Beverly Hills, all approved directly by her son, Grant Mercer, without board oversight."

Marian turned pale white. "Those... those were networking events!"

"They were corporate embezzlement, Mrs. Mercer," Victoria Sterling interjected smoothly from the side of the table. "And under Federal SEC regulations, unauthorized personal expense reimbursements above one hundred thousand dollars carry mandatory felony reporting requirements."

Paige stood up from the bench, her face twisted in panic. "What about me?! I don't even work here! Why am I being dragged into this?!"

Evelyn turned her head toward her sister-in-law. "Paige, eighteen months ago, you borrowed twelve thousand dollars from my personal savings account, claiming you needed it for an emergency medical procedure. On that same afternoon, corporate credit card records show that Grant issued you a corporate 'vendor card' for Mercer & Vance."

Evelyn brought up a bank statement.

"You have charged eighty-four thousand dollars in personal luxury shopping, luxury resort stays, and designer handbags to Mercer & Vance’s corporate account. An account meant to fund emergency fuel reserves for our Midwest shipping fleet."

"You... you spied on us!" Paige shrieked, tears springing to her eyes. "You evil, conniving bitch! You acted like a quiet little housewife while you were recording everything we did!"

"I didn't spy on you, Paige," Evelyn said softly. "I simply did my job. You were just too arrogant to notice."

Evelyn gathered her papers, stacking them into a neat, precise pile. She looked at the ten independent board members.

"As Regional Director representing the sixty-percent controlling share of Vance International, I hereby move for the immediate termination of Grant Mercer as Chief Operating Officer for cause, effective immediately."

"Seconded," one of the senior board members called out instantly.

"I further move," Evelyn continued, "for the immediate removal of Marian Mercer from the Board of Directors, the revocation of all corporate credit cards issued to the Mercer family, and the immediate freezing of all executive bonuses."

"Seconded!" three board members shouted in unison.

"You can't do this!" Grant screamed, rushing toward the head of the table. "My father built this company! My name is on the front of the building!"

Before Grant could reach Evelyn, two imposing, broad-shouldered men in dark suits stepped out from the side foyer—Evelyn’s private security detail. They stepped effortlessly into Grant’s path, placing two heavy hands on his chest and stopping him dead in his tracks.

"Mr. Mercer," Victoria Sterling said, holding out a thick legal packet. "You are officially served with a Corporate Restraining Order. You have thirty minutes to clear your personal belongings from the COO office under security supervision. You are barred from entering any Mercer & Vance property worldwide."

Grant stared at the papers in his hands, his chest heaving, his tie crooked, his polished corporate facade completely destroyed.

He looked at Evelyn. She was standing at the head of the table, tall, radiant, magnificent, flanked by Arthur Vance and her legal team. She looked like a queen ruling over a realm he had never even known existed.

"Evelyn..." Grant choked out, a desperate, pathetic pleading entering his voice for the first time. "Evelyn, please... we can talk about this. We’re married. We’re family. I made mistakes... Vanessa meant nothing to me... I was stressed..."

Evelyn picked up her leather briefcase, looking at him with a mix of pity and absolute finality.

"We are not family, Grant," she said. "We are simply two people who are about to go through a very thorough, very expensive divorce."

She turned to Arthur. "Let us proceed to the fifth-floor conference room, Arthur. We have to prepare the criminal referral package for the State’s Attorney."

As Evelyn walked toward the executive exit, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor, Marian broke down into loud, hysterical sobs, Paige began screaming at Grant, and Grant stood frozen, watching his entire kingdom burn to ash in less than forty-five minutes.

Evelyn opened the double doors, stepping out into the bright morning sunshine streaming through the glass corridor.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a text notification from her bank:

Notice: Temporary Injunction & Eviction Warrant Issued for 1412 N Dearborn Pkwy. Sheriff enforcement scheduled for 12:00 PM.

Evelyn checked her watch. It was 10:15 AM.

She looked at her driver waiting near the elevator.

"Thomas," she said with a cool, sharp smile. "Call the locksmith. Let’s go reclaim my home."
