Chapter 6 - THE GARDEN AFTER THE STORMThree months later, the willow tree in the backyard looked different. The city had removed the makeshift prison site, turning it over to forensic investigators who combed every inch of the soil for evidence, fingerprints, and corroborating data.
The house at 424 Elmwood Drive was entirely empty now.
Thomas was currently sitting in a maximum-security county holding facility awaiting trial on multiple felony counts, including attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault, conspiracy, and endangerment of an unborn child. His high-priced defense attorneys had tried to float the “unstable wife” narrative during the initial bail hearing, but District Attorney Vance had simply played thirty seconds of the audio recording I had captured from beneath the soil—Thomas laughing as he poured water over my head, Eleanor mocking my distress, and Mara cheering on my torment.
The judge had denied bail without blinking.
As for Eleanor and Mara, they were currently facing accessory charges and grand jury investigations into their involvement in the cover-up and financial embezzlement schemes Thomas had been running. Their social standing had collapsed overnight; their country club memberships were revoked, their friends abandoned them, and their pristine suburban facade had burned down to ash.
I stood on the front porch of my new apartment downtown, the afternoon sun warming my face. In my arms rested my newborn son—healthy, strong, and breathing easily in the open air.
My phone buzzed on the coffee table inside. I picked it up, glancing at a notification from my attorney confirming that the corporate asset transfers had been reversed, Thomas’s accounts had been frozen, and full custody of my son had been legally granted to me without contest.

I looked down at the baby, brushing a soft curl of hair from his forehead. He had my eyes, and he possessed a fierce, unyielding strength that no cage on earth could ever bury.
The nightmare was behind us. The ground had cleared. And we were finally, beautifully, free.
