Chapter 5 - FIRE IN THE CELLARBefore Sheriff Vance could lunge forward to grab Martha’s arm, a dull, concussive thump echoed from beneath the floorboards, shaking the dust from the overhead light fixtures.

A thick plume of acrid, grey-black smoke began to seep upward through the floor vents in the hallway.

“They’ve torched the archive room!” Sarah screamed, grabbing Maya’s hand and pulling her toward the front door.

“Sheriff, the cellar entrance from the outside!” Claire yelled, turning and sprinting toward the kitchen exit despite her screaming ribs.

She burst out the back door into the freezing evening air, ignoring the snow soaking through her socks. Sheriff Vance was right behind her, drawing his radio to call for fire support as they rounded the corner of the wraparound porch toward the root cellar bulkhead.

The wooden doors were fully blown open now, belching thick, toxic smoke into the twilight.

Through the haze, a figure emerged from the descending stone steps—coughing violently, his face smeared with soot, clutching a heavy iron lockbox in one arm.

Thomas.

He froze when he saw Claire standing at the top of the stone stairs, flanked by the sheriff with a drawn pistol. For a split second, his eyes registered shock, then humiliation, and finally, a cold, feral desperation.

“Claire,” Thomas wheezed, wiping a black streak of soot across his forehead. His voice took on that old, familiar, wheedling tone—the soft, manufactured remorse he always used after a beating. “Thank God. You don't understand, baby. Your sister... she’s lying. She’s trying to steal the land. You know how my mother and I take care of you—”

“Shut up, Thomas,” Claire said.

Her voice wasn't loud. It didn't tremble. It carried the absolute, crushing weight of a woman who had finally stepped out from under a mountain of lies.

“Drop the box,” Sheriff Vance ordered, aiming his pistol squarely at Thomas’s chest. “Put your hands behind your head. You’re under arrest for the murder of Arthur Higgins, domestic terrorism, and arson.”

Thomas’s eyes darted between the sheriff’s gun and the open cellar behind him. A twisted, manic grin spread across his soot-stained face.

“You think a piece of paper from a county judge is going to save you?” Thomas snarled. He suddenly swung the heavy iron lockbox sideways, hurling it directly at Sheriff Vance’s knees.

The sheriff stumbled hard into the snow, his gun discharging harmlessly into the frozen dirt.

Before Thomas could dive toward the side pasture where his snowmobile was idling, a small, dark shadow darted out from behind the woodpile.

Maya.

She didn't scream. She didn't hesitate. She threw her entire weight forward, tackling her father around the knees with the fierce momentum of a predator bringing down a wounded buck.

Thomas tripped hard over her, crashing face-first onto the frozen gravel.

Before he could push himself up, Sheriff Vance was on top of him, snapping the cold steel handcuffs over his wrists with a definitive, satisfying click.
