Chapter 3 - The Resurrection

The annual Baltimore Maritime Gala was the premier social event of the autumn season. Held within the grand, crystal-chandeliered ballroom of the historic Harbor Hotel, it brought together the city’s elite—shipping magnates, politicians, judges, and corporate titans.

This year, however, the atmosphere in the grand ballroom was thick with somber condolences. A large, ornate floral arrangement sat near the entrance, draped in black ribbon, honoring the tragic, untimely death of Rosalind Sterling-Vance, who had supposedly perished just four days earlier when her husband’s SUV plunged into Savannah Creek.

Garrett Vance stood near the center of the room, impeccably dressed in a bespoke tuxedo, accepting hushed condolences with a masterclass of sorrowful humility. Penelope stood gracefully by his side, wearing a stunning midnight-blue gown that subtly highlighted her pregnancy, playing the role of the devoted, grieving sister-in-law.

"It’s just devastating," a city councilman murmured, patting Garrett’s shoulder. "I don't know how you’re holding up, son. First your parents, and now losing Rosalind... it's a tragedy beyond words."

"Thank you, Councilman," Garrett replied, his voice thick with manufactured emotion. "It’s been... difficult. But I know Rosalind would want me to stay strong and keep the shipyard running. In fact, tomorrow morning, the board is scheduled to ratify the emergency succession papers, ensuring uninterrupted leadership for the enterprise."

Across the room, the heavy double doors of the ballroom slowly swung open.

At first, nobody paid attention, assuming it was late-arriving guests or catering staff. But as a heavy, deliberate silence rippled outward from the entrance, conversations died away one by one. Heads turned. Glasses froze halfway to mouths.

Walking through the doors was a woman wearing a floor-length, backless scarlet silk gown that commanded the entire room. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, her posture straight and unyielding, and her eyes fixed with icy precision on the center of the room.

It was Rosalind.

Beside her, walking with a steady, commanding stride that showed no trace of a wheelchair, was Tobias Sterling.

Gasps erupted like scattered gunfire across the ballroom. Several older socialites crossed themselves in sheer superstitious terror, whispering that a ghost had entered the room.

Garrett’s glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, explosive crash. All the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse carved from stone. Beside him, Penelope let out a choked, terrified sob, clutching her stomach as she staggered backward into a display table.

Rosalind and Tobias walked down the center aisle, the crowd parting before them as if they were parting the Red Sea. Every eye in the room was locked on them in absolute, stunned disbelief.

Garrett managed to force his vocal cords to work, his voice shaking violently as he pointed a trembling finger at them. " You... you’re dead. Both of you. We pulled the car—we saw—"

"You saw what you wanted to see, Garrett," Rosalind interrupted, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent ballroom, carrying the weight of absolute authority. She stopped ten feet away from her husband, looking down at him with an expression of profound, cutting disgust. "You thought you could cut my brakes, rig my seatbelt, and poison my coffee for three years to steal my family's legacy. You thought you could bury us in the river and walk away scot-free."

"She’s insane!" Garrett shouted, panic finally cracking his polished veneer as he looked wildly around at the stunned faces of the city elite. "She’s delusional! Someone call security—she's having a psychotic break!"

"Security isn't coming, Garrett," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the doorway.

Three men in dark suits stepped into the ballroom, flanked by uniformed federal marshals. The lead agent flashed a gold shield that gleamed brilliantly under the crystal chandeliers.

"Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation, thankfully," the federal investigator announced, stepping forward with an arrest warrant in his hand. "Garrett Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy, wire fraud, and the orchestrating of corporate embezzlement across state lines."

"This is a setup!" Garrett screamed, lunging backward as the marshals moved in, their heavy handcuffs clicking ominously in the quiet room. "This is a malicious conspiracy!"

"Is it?" Tobias asked coldly, stepping forward and tapping a small flash drive against his palm. "We have three years of medical logs detailing the neurotoxin you slipped into Rosalind’s evening tea, complete with chemical receipts from your private procurement accounts. We have audio recordings from your study this morning detailing your plans to liquidate the Sterling estate. And, most importantly, we have the federal tax documents proving that you and your father have been laundering stolen shipping revenues through shell companies in the Caymans."

May you like

Garrett slumped forward, the handcuffs snapping securely around his wrists as federal agents hauled him toward the exit. As he was dragged past Penelope—who was currently being questioned by two local detectives regarding her involvement in the embezzlement ring—he shot his wife one last look of venomous, unadulterated hatred.

Rosalind watched him go without a single flicker of emotion. The nightmare was over. The trap had closed.
