Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of a ParasiteThe medical helicopter’s rotors were spinning overhead, kicking up a furious vortex of snow and wind, but inside the warm cabin of the lead SUV, the world was completely still.

Paramedics had already checked my vital signs, wrapped me in three layers of heated blankets, and hooked me up to an IV drip to stabilize my core temperature and prevent premature labor contractions. My baby was kicking again—stronger this time, as if sensing that the nightmare was over and the cavalry had arrived.
Through the tinted window, I watched the chaotic scene unfold outside.
State troopers had swarmed the property. Floodlights cut through the falling snow, illuminating the stark white walls of the country house where I had spent three years playing the role of a trapped bird. Two officers were currently reading Daniel his Miranda rights as they hoisted him up from the slush, his designer suit ruined, his face smeared with mud and snow.
Vanessa was being led toward a second cruiser, sobbing loudly as her designer boots soaked through in the freezing mud.
My father sat on the plush leather seat across from me, his expression softening just a fraction as he watched the paramedics monitor my heart rate. He reached out, his weathered, powerful hand gently covering mine.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice losing its corporate frost and sounding simply like a worried father.
"I am now, Dad," I whispered, squeezing his fingers. "Thank you for coming."
"I told you on your wedding day, Emily," he said, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "A Hale never forgets an insult, and a Hale never leaves family unprotected. I gave you six months of breathing room to let him expose his true character entirely on his own terms. I wanted every court in Georgia to see the monster he really is before I took his entire world apart."
"Did you get the financial records?" I asked.
My father’s smile turned razor-sharp. "Weeks ago. Every single fraudulent wire transfer, every shell corporation he set up in the Bahamas, every falsified tax document. When he forged your signature on those corporate transfer papers last month, he crossed from civil domestic dispute straight into federal felony territory. He didn't just steal from my subsidiary—he signed his own financial death warrant."
He paused, glancing out the window toward the police cruisers.
"And as for what that woman said just before the police arrived..." My father’s eyes darkened. "DNA paternity tests will be ordered by the court tomorrow morning. But regardless of the biological results, Daniel’s fate was sealed the moment he raised a hand against you."

"He thought he was so smart," I murmured, leaning my head back against the plush headrest as the warmth from the thermal blanket finally chased the chill from my bones. "He thought because I didn't drive a sports car or wear a flashy Rolex, I was someone he could step on."
"Men like Daniel are parasites," my father said softly. "They mistake quiet strength for weakness because they are too hollow inside to recognize real power. But don't worry, Emily. By the time my legal team finishes with him, he won't even be able to afford a bus ticket out of Savannah."
