Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

By three o'clock that afternoon, the corporate boardroom on the sixty-second floor of the St. Claire Tower had been completely cleansed.

The framed portraits of Daniel Cross that had lined the executive hallway had been removed, leaving faint rectangular shadows against the walnut paneling. In the main conference room, the twelve members of the board of directors sat in absolute, tense silence, their phones buzzing intermittently with notifications of the collapsing markets.

I sat at the head of the long obsidian table.

I had traded the hospital gown for an ivory wool coat draped over my shoulders and a charcoal maternity dress. Dr. Sterling had insisted on sending an EMT to sit in the corner of the boardroom with medical monitors, but I felt stronger than I had in years. The dull ache in my back remained, but the cloud that had hung over my mind for three years had completely dissipated.

Arthur Vance stood at my right hand. Maya Lin stood at my left, operating the display terminal that projected real-time forensic data onto the eighty-inch wall screen.

"Gentlemen," Arthur began, his voice cutting through the anxious rustling of papers. "As of two-fifteen this afternoon, the SEC has formally accepted the resignation of Daniel Cross as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, pursuant to the morality and criminal indictment clauses of his executive contract."

Richard Thorne, a senior director who had spent the last two years golfing with Daniel and rubber-stamping his acquisitions, cleared his throat nervously. "Evelyn... Mrs. Cross. We were unaware of the extent of Daniel's... irregular accounting. We were presented with falsified audits. Had we known—"

"You knew enough, Richard," I said, cutting him off without raising my voice. "You knew that seventy-five million dollars was transferred through three shell corporations registered in your home state of Nevada. You received a two percent advisory fee on each of those transactions."

Thorne went dead silent, his face draining of all color.

"I am not here to dismantle this company," I continued, leaning forward and resting my forearms on the polished obsidian. "My grandfather built this enterprise to last generations. Daniel Cross was an infection, but an infection that has now been excised. As of this moment, I am exercising my rights under the St. Claire Trust to reclaim one hundred percent of the controlling voting interest."

I looked around the table, meeting the eyes of every man and woman present. Some looked terrified; others looked deeply ashamed. None dared to challenge me.

"For those of you who wish to cooperate fully with the Department of Justice and Arthur Vance’s audit team, your resignations will be accepted quietly at the end of the quarter. For those who do not, criminal referrals will be forwarded to the Attorney General before five o'clock today. You have thirty minutes to make your decisions."

I stood up, supported by Arthur’s arm. "This meeting is concluded."

Without waiting for their responses, I walked out of the boardroom, my heels clicking firmly against the Italian marble floors. For the first time in my life, I wasn't the heiress being steered by stronger hands; I was the master of the house.

Downstairs, in the underground holding facility of the county precinct, a very different scene was playing out.

Daniel Cross sat in an interrogation room beneath the harsh glare of fluorescent lights, wearing an orange processing jumpsuit. His lawyer, Jonathan Croft, had already left the room, having formally withdrawn from representation after discovering Daniel’s secret accounts were entirely frozen and incapable of paying his retainer.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Assistant District Attorney Samuel Mercer and two senior detectives.

"Your mistress gave us the cryptographic keys forty-five minutes ago, Daniel," Mercer said casually, flipping through a blue folder. "She gave us the access codes to the Zurich sub-accounts, the texts you sent her discussing how to 'manage' Evelyn’s medication, and the security footage from your home study where you discussed liquidating the trust assets."

"Vanessa is lying," Daniel spat, his voice hoarse from hours of screaming. "She planned the whole thing! She was the Chief Financial Officer! She manipulated me!"

"Vanessa is facing eight years for corporate conspiracy under a plea agreement," Mercer said, leaning forward. "You, on the other hand, are looking at twenty-five to life. We’re charging you with grand larceny, securities fraud, aggravated assault on a pregnant person, and attempted murder by intentional poisoning through the unauthorized administration of neuroleptics."

Daniel’s head jerked up. "Attempted murder? That’s absurd! I never tried to kill her!"

"You had Dr. Moore supply lithium and haloperidol to slip into her prenatal vitamins," Detective Miller said, tossing a plastic evidence bag onto the table. Inside was a bottle of custom-compounded supplements recovered from Daniel’s private safe at the manor. "The toxicology screen from Mrs. Cross’s blood draw this morning came back positive for sub-therapeutic doses of heavy sedatives. In a pregnant woman, Mr. Cross, that constitutes chemical assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and termination of pregnancy."

Daniel stared at the plastic bag, his pupils dilating with pure, unadulterated terror. The arrogance that had sustained him for a lifetime seemed to cave in on itself.

"I need to talk to Evelyn," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling violently. "Let me call her. She loves me. She wouldn't let you do this to me. She’s just angry about Vanessa! If I can just speak to her—"

"Mrs. Cross has obtained a permanent restraining order, Mr. Cross," Mercer said, closing the folder with a definitive snap. "She doesn't want to hear your voice ever again. And frankly, given where you’re going, you won't be hearing anyone’s voice except your cellmate's for the next three decades."

Mercer stood up and knocked twice on the steel door. "Take him back to holding."

As the guards hauled Daniel to his feet, he began to thrash, screaming profanities into the concrete corridor, his cries echoing hollowly until the heavy iron door slammed shut, cutting him off from the world he had tried so desperately to conquer.
