Chapter 4 - The Sting at the Marina

The rain fell in torrents over the harbor, turning the black waters of the marina into a churning sea of white foam. Luxury yachts rocked violently against their moorings, their halyards clattering against metal masts like hollow gunfire.
Inside Pier 14’s private office, Victor Vance sat behind a mahogany desk, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch. At sixty, he possessed the same sharp jawline as his brother Richard, but his eyes were sunken, dark, and filled with a bitter, simmering malice.
Opposite him sat Eleanor Palmer, looking like a ghost of her former self. Her designer clothes were gone, replaced by a cheap raincoat, her face pale and lined with desperate panic.
"Victor, you have to help us!" Eleanor pleaded, her hands trembling as she reached across the desk. "Julian is facing twenty years in federal prison! The bank is auctioning my house next week! The press is tearing us apart! You promised us if we brought Audrey down, we would all be protected!"
Victor took a slow sip of his scotch, looking at her with cold contempt.
"Julian was a sloppy, impatient idiot," Victor said smoothly. "He was supposed to manipulate her into signing the corporate merger, not beat her so badly she called the police and triggered a federal audit. He ruined a four-year operation because he couldn't control his temper."
"He did it for us!" Eleanor cried out. "He did it to get the money faster!"
"And now he is useless," Victor replied, setting his glass down with a heavy clunk. "I’m flying out to Dubai in an hour. The Aegis accounts are being drained as we speak. You and your son can rot in state prison for all I care."
Victor stood up, buttoning his trench coat and grabbing a leather briefcase containing three million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds. He walked toward the door, leaving Eleanor weeping on the floor.
He stepped out of the office and onto the slick, rain-drenched wooden dock, heading toward his private yacht, The Nemesis.
Suddenly, the floodlights along the pier burst to life, blinding him in a brilliant glare of white light.
"Going somewhere, Uncle Victor?" a clear, sharp voice echoed through the rain.
Victor shielded his eyes. Standing thirty feet away on the dock, sheltered under a dark umbrella, was Audrey. She wore a black trench coat, her posture straight and unyielding against the howling wind.
Beside her stood Richard Vance, along with six armed federal marshals and Special Agent Miller of the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division.
Victor froze, his hand instinctively twitching toward the inner pocket of his coat.
"Don't even think about it, Victor," Agent Miller called out through a megaphone, his sidearm drawn and trained on Victor’s chest. "Federal agents! Drop the briefcase and put your hands on your head!"
Victor let out a harsh, bitter laugh, looking past the agents to his brother. "Richard! Still hiding behind badges and guns, I see! You think you’ve won? The Belize accounts are clean! You have no jurisdiction there!"
Audrey stepped forward, taking a few calm paces down the wet wooden dock.
"The Belize accounts were clean, Victor," Audrey said loudly over the sound of the rain. "Until 11:00 AM today, when I deployed a forensic mirror protocol through the Department of Justice’s international banking task force. Every dollar you tried to transfer to Dubai was intercepted at the intermediary clearing bank in New York."
Victor’s face twisted in sudden, hysterical fury. "You... you little bitch!"
"You spent four years using Julian to try and destroy my father through me," Audrey said, her voice cutting through the storm like a blade. "You thought I was just a naive girl who could be beaten into submission. But I am a Vance. And unlike you, I actually know how to follow the money."
Victor made a sudden, desperate move, dropping the briefcase and lunging toward the edge of the dock as if to jump into the dark water below.
BANG!
A flash-bang grenade detonated near his feet, blinding and disorienting him. Within seconds, three federal marshals tackled Victor to the wet wooden planks, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel restraints around his wrists.

As they dragged a cursing, frantic Victor past her, Audrey looked down at him with quiet, absolute victory.
"Give my regards to Julian in federal custody," she said softly.
