Chapter 6 - The View from the Coast

Two years later.

The ocean breeze carried the sweet scent of wild jasmine and salt water across the expansive outdoor terrace of my cliffside home in Malibu. Below, the Pacific Ocean stretched out infinitely, glowing under the vibrant pink and orange hues of an extraordinary California sunset.

At thirty-three, my life looked entirely unrecognizable from the quiet, insecure existence I had led three years ago.

My career as West Coast Director had flourished so dramatically that I had been elevated to Vice President of Global Brand Strategy, leading international campaigns from Tokyo to London. My name was featured in executive journals, my advice sought by industry titans, and my confidence rooted in an unshakeable foundation of self-worth.

Inside the house, soft jazz music floated through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

Julian stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a comfortable white linen shirt, carrying two glasses of chilled white wine. He walked up behind me, wrapping his broad, warm arms securely around my waist, resting his chin gently against the top of my head.

“You’re thinking deeply again,” Julian murmured with a soft chuckle, his lips pressing a warm kiss against my temple. “Where are you right now, sweetheart?”

I leaned back against his chest, placing my hands over his, feeling the steady, rock-solid rhythm of his heartbeat against my shoulder.

Unlike Ethan, Julian had never once made me feel like an option. He didn't have hidden female best friends who required midnight rescues, nor did he shrink from my ambition. He celebrated my victories louder than his own, respected my boundaries fiercely, and loved me with a mature, transparent devotion that required no guessing games or emotional gymnastics.

“I was just thinking about Flight 412 from Seattle,” I admitted softly, looking out at the endless golden horizon.

Julian’s grip on my waist tightened protectively, his tone turning warm and reassuring. “Does it still hurt?”

“No,” I smiled, turning around in his arms to look up into his striking blue eyes. “Not at all. In fact, I was just thinking that it was the absolute best day of my life.”

Julian raised an eyebrow, a handsome, amused smile playing on his lips. “The day you caught your ex cheating on a plane?”

“The day I stopped waiting for someone else to choose me,” I corrected gently, reaching up to touch his jawline. “If I hadn't changed my flight that morning, if I hadn't sat three rows behind him, I might have spent another ten years shrinking myself to fit into a broken marriage. That terrible flight gave me my life back. It brought me to this city. It brought me to my work. And ultimately... it brought me to you.”

Julian looked at me with an intensity that made my heart swell with pure, boundless happiness. He leaned down, cupping my cheek in his warm palm, pressing his lips against mine in a slow, deep, breathtaking kiss that tasted of sweet wine and eternal promises.

When he pulled back, he smiled, clinking his wine glass gently against mine.

“To Flight 412,” Julian toasted softly, his eyes shining with adoration.

“To choosing myself,” I replied, taking a slow sip as the sun dipped beneath the Pacific horizon.

I looked out over the ocean, completely free, utterly cherished, and finally home.
