Chapter 2 - The Mask of Respectability

At 3:30 a.m., the VIP lounge of El Mural de los Poblanos, an elite private dining club in the historic center of Puebla, smelled of aged cognac, expensive cigars, and fresh roses.
Sergio Santillán sat at a corner table beneath a crystal chandelier, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old single malt scotch. Across from him sat Camila, wearing a red silk dress that matched her lipstick. Her phone rested on the tablecloth between them, the screen still glowing with the photograph Sergio had taken in his garage three hours earlier.
"You're terrible, Sergio," Camila purred, taking a sip of wine and laughing softly. "What if she passes out in there? What if the neighbors hear something?"
"Let them hear," Sergio said smoothly, adjusting the gold cufflinks on his crisp white shirt. "The walls are soundproofed, and the gate is locked. Valentina needed a lesson. She was starting to think because she was carrying my heir she had leverage in my house. Tomorrow morning, after she begs me on her knees, I'll let her out, take her to a private clinic, and have her sign the custody release forms."
Camila leaned across the table, her eyes glinting with greed. "And the house in Lomas? The deed is still in her name, isn't it?"
"My lawyers prepared the transfer papers last week," Sergio replied with a cruel smile. "She’ll sign them before the weekend is over. By next month, this entire city will know you as the new Mrs. Santillán."
Camila giggled, touching his hand. "I love a man who knows how to control his property."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sudden, violent vibration of Sergio’s phone. The screen displayed the name of his chief security officer at Santillán Logistics.
Sergio frowned, picking up the call. "What is it, Marcos? I told you not to disturb me tonight."
"Boss..." Marcos’s voice was shaking, background noise filled with screaming sirens and heavy footsteps. "Where are you? You need to run. Right now."
Sergio stood up, his smile vanishing. "What are you talking about?"
"The house in Lomas... it's compromised! A team of military police just breached the gates! They brought two armored vehicles and a medical unit! They took your wife out on a gurney—"
"What?!" Sergio roared, knocking his scotch glass off the table. It shattered against the tiled floor. "Who authorized a military breach on my private property?!"
"Captain Rodrigo Reyes," Marcos stammered. "He's her brother, boss! He had a federal search warrant signed directly by the Regional Military Commander! They found the cage, Sergio... they found the blood... and they found the scratches on the metal tray!"
Camila gasped, sitting back, her face draining of color. "Sergio... what did you do?"
Before Sergio could answer, the double oak doors of the private dining room were slammed open with tremendous force.
Four heavily armed officers of the Federal Ministerial Police stormed into the room, their assault rifles raised, green laser sights painting targets across Sergio’s chest. Behind them walked Captain Rodrigo Reyes, dressed in his full military dress uniform, his face carved out of granite.
"Sergio Santillán," the lead federal agent announced, his voice echoing through the quiet restaurant. "You are under arrest for aggravated kidnapping, attempted murder, domestic torture, and human rights violations."
Sergio tried to recover his composure, forcing a arrogant sneer onto his face. He stepped behind his chair, straightening his jacket.
"This is an outrage!" Sergio shouted, pointing an angry finger at Rodrigo. "Do you know who I am? I am the CEO of Santillán Logistics! I contribute millions to the state budget! This man is my brother-in-law, and he is using his military rank to conduct an illegal personal vendetta because my wife had a medical emergency at home!"
Rodrigo walked slowly toward the table. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply pulled a sealed clear plastic evidence bag from his jacket and dropped it onto the table in front of Camila.
Inside the bag was Camila’s phone, which federal cyber-intelligence agents had remotely mirrored the moment the warrant was signed.
On the screen was the photo of Valentina trapped in the dog cage, accompanied by Sergio’s text: “She’s finally learning her place.” And directly beneath it was Camila’s reply: “Let her suffer. Then come to me.”
Camila let out a terrified shriek, pushing her chair back and backing into the corner of the room. "I didn't do anything! It was all him! He told me she was crazy! He told me she locked herself in there!"
"You toxic little parasite," Sergio spat, glaring at her before turning back to Rodrigo. "Listen to me, Reyes. My legal team will have me out of holding before the sun comes up. You think a few scratches in a garage can ruin a man of my standing in Puebla?"
Rodrigo stood six inches from Sergio’s face. The pressure radiating off the army captain was so intense that the federal officers instinctively took a step back.
"You're right, Sergio," Rodrigo whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "The scratches in the garage won't ruin you. But the federal audit into Santillán Logistics that started twenty minutes ago will."
Sergio’s eyes widened in sudden, genuine horror. "What?"
"Do you really think I spent the last three months in Colombia just doing training?" Rodrigo asked, a cold, dark smile touching his eyes. "I was working with international counter-narcotics intelligence. We’ve been tracking the shipping manifests of Santillán Logistics for a year. We know about the unregistered containers in Veracruz. We know about the shell accounts in Panama. And we know that your entire 'respectable' empire is built on money laundering."
Sergio’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the table to keep from falling.
"Take him," Rodrigo commanded flatly.
The federal agents tackled Sergio to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists. As they dragged him out of the restaurant, screaming threats and curses into the night, Rodrigo picked up Camila’s phone from the table.

He looked at the woman trembling in the corner.
"You wanted his money, Camila," Rodrigo said, dropping the phone into his pocket. "I hope you have enough left to pay for a very good defense lawyer. You're going to need one."
