Chapter 3 - The Leftover Cake and the Broken FoyerTwo days later, the spring sun was shining brightly over our upscale Savannah neighborhood, belying the absolute storm brewing inside the house at 42 Elmwood Terrace.

Lucas Vance walked up the brick walkway with an easy, arrogant stride. Beside him, his mother, Eleanor, carried a pristine white bakery box tied with a satin ribbon, filled with leftover fondant birthday cake from her extravagant celebration at the country club.
“Honestly, Lucas, I still can’t believe Rachel threw such a childish tantrum over a family dinner,” Eleanor complained, adjusting her diamond tennis bracelet as she walked. “Making a scene about blood pressure, of all things. Some women just love playing the victim to control their husbands.”
“She’ll learn her lesson after a couple of days alone in the house,” Lucas replied smoothly, pulling his house keys from his pocket. “She’s probably starved, exhausted, and ready to apologize for ruining your birthday week. I told her straight out—she can’t manipulate me with her dramatics.”
Lucas fitted his key into the front door lock, but before he could turn it, he noticed something strange.
The heavy mahogany door wasn't sitting right in its frame. The deadbolt latch was mangled, and deep, splintered gasps of wood surrounded the handle.
“What the—” Lucas muttered, pushing the door open with a hard shove.
The door swung inward with a sickening crunch, the heavy brass hinges groaning under the strain.
Lucas froze in the entryway. Eleanor dropped the bakery box.
The white frosted cake spilled out across the polished hardwood floor, but neither of them looked at it. Their eyes were locked on the living room and kitchen ahead.
The white tile floor of the kitchen still bore the dark, indelible brown stain of dried blood—a stark, horrifying reminder of the night before. The glass shards had been swept up by crime scene investigators, but the gouge marks from where the police battering ram had struck the interior walls were impossible to miss.
“Lucas… what happened here?” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling as she clutched her son’s arm. “Where is Rachel?”
Before Lucas could form an answer, his eyes caught movement on the entryway side table.
Resting right beside the decorative bowl where he usually tossed his car keys was a thick stack of official legal documents, topped by a bright orange legal notice printed in bold, unyielding font: TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER & NOTICE OF EMERGENCY CUSTODY HEARING.
Lucas’s face drained of color. The smug, self-satisfied grin vanished entirely, replaced by a sudden, creeping terror.
He lunged forward, snatching the papers off the table. His eyes scanned the lines of legal jargon, his breathing turning shallow and frantic.
“Petitioner: Rachel Hayes… Respondent: Lucas Hayes… Charges: Felony Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Confinement… Asset Freeze Initiated…”
“No,” Lucas breathed, backing away from the table as if the paper were venomous. “No, this is insane. She’s lying. She’s exaggerating!”
He pulled out his phone with shaking fingers, swiping frantically to open his smart home app. He tapped the icon for the front door lock to check the security logs.
The screen flashed red: ACCESS DENIED. MASTER ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES REVOKED BY COURT ORDER.
A heavy thud echoed behind them. Lucas whipped around.
Standing on the splintered threshold of the front door were two local police officers in uniform, flanked by a tall, broad-shouldered sheriff’s deputy.
“Lucas Vance?” the lead officer asked, resting his hand casually on his holster.
Lucas swallowed hard, his throat dry as dust. “Yes?”
“You have multiple active felony warrants for your arrest arising from an incident on Friday night. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
Eleanor let out a piercing shriek. “Do you know who we are?! My son is a pillar of this community! You can’t arrest him over a domestic dispute!”
“Ma’am, step back from the suspect,” the deputy warned, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs with a cold, metallic click. “This isn't a domestic dispute. This is a criminal investigation into attempted endangerment resulting in emergency medical trauma.”

As the cold steel snapped around Lucas’s wrists, his eyes met his mother’s in panic. For the first time in his life, Lucas realized that no amount of money, family status, or arrogance could save him.
The life he thought he controlled was gone forever.
