Chapter 3 - The Corporate CoupWhile Diane and Vanessa languished in holding cells awaiting arraignment, a secondary war erupted in the glass-walled boardrooms of Cross & Associates, the multi-million-dollar real estate and shipping conglomerate Ethan had inherited from his father.

With Diane incapacitated and legally barred from approaching Ethan or any corporate property due to emergency restraining orders, her longtime allies on the board of directors seized their moment.
Arthur Sterling, a greasy, silver-haired vice president who had served as Diane’s chief lapdog for twenty years, called an emergency board meeting for Monday morning.
When Ethan walked into the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, the atmosphere was thick with hostility. The twelve board members sat around the mahogany table like vultures circling a dying carcass. Arthur sat at the head of the table—a seat usually reserved for the CEO or Diane herself.
“Good of you to finally join us, CEO Cross,” Arthur drawled, leaning back in his leather chair with a smug, condescending grin. “Given the catastrophic PR fallout of your mother and sister being arrested like common criminals over a domestic tiff, the board has convened to discuss urgent stabilization measures.”
Ethan didn't blink. He calmly pulled out the chair at the opposite end of the table, sat down, and folded his hands neatly in front of him.
“Stabilization measures, Arthur?” Ethan asked quietly. “Please, enlighten me.”
“The company's stock dropped four percent this morning,” another board member chimed in nervously. “Investors are spooked. The media is painting the Cross family as unstable, violent criminals. If this narrative continues, our upcoming municipal real estate contracts in downtown Chicago will be jeopardized.”
Arthur nodded sagely, playing his hand. “Therefore, the executive committee has drafted a motion of temporary receivership. Effective immediately, voting rights belonging to the founding family block—specifically Diane Cross’s controlling thirty-five percent share, which she has assigned to an emergency proxy—will be transferred to a managing trustee until this legal circus is resolved.”
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “A managing trustee? Let me guess. You, Arthur?”
“Someone with steady, experienced hands,” Arthur replied smoothly, flashing a shark-like smile. “Someone who can protect this company from the emotional distractions of a messy marriage and a toxic family feud.”
The room held its breath. They thought Ethan was cornered. They thought that between his wife’s assault, his mother’s arrest, and the sudden stock dip, he was entirely vulnerable.
Ethan let out a soft, humorless chuckle. It was a sound that made Arthur’s smile falter slightly.
“Arthur,” Ethan said, standing up slowly and buttoning his suit jacket. “Did you really think I spent the last three days dealing with my mother without auditing every single corporate subsidiary she touched?”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed. “What are you talking about?”
Ethan tapped a button on his smartphone. The massive smart screen at the front of the boardroom flickered to life, displaying a complex financial web of offshore shell companies, unauthorized real estate liquidations, and suspicious wire transfers.
“Meet Vanguard Holdings LLC,” Ethan announced, his voice ringing crisp and clear through the silent room. “A private entity registered in the Cayman Islands six months ago. Over the past quarter, this shell company illegally funneled twelve million dollars of corporate reserve funds into private accounts controlled by none other than... Arthur Sterling and my mother.”
The color instantly drained from Arthur’s face. He half-stood from his chair, stammering, “That—that is a complete fabrication! Those documents are forged!”
“Are they?” Ethan asked calmly, tossing a thick manila folder onto the center of the mahogany table. “I had federal forensic accountants review the ledger over the weekend. Every signature matches yours, Arthur. Every IP address traced back to your office terminal. Embezzlement, corporate fraud, and conspiracy to commit securities theft.”
Ethan walked slowly around the table, stopping right beside Arthur’s chair, leaning down until he was whispering directly into the older man's ear.
“You wanted my seat, Arthur? You wanted control of the family trust? Congratulations. You’re about to receive complete control over a federal prison cell.”
Before Arthur could speak, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung wide open. Two federal marshals, accompanied by an agent from the Securities and Exchange Commission, walked straight into the room.
“Arthur Sterling?” the lead agent called out, holding up a federal arrest warrant. “You’re under arrest for corporate wire fraud and embezzlement. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
As Arthur was hauled out of the boardroom in absolute, stunned silence, Ethan looked around the pale, trembling faces of the remaining board members.
“Any other questions regarding the stability of this company?” Ethan asked softly.
May you like
Every head around the table shook in unison.
“Good,” Ethan said, turning toward the double doors. “Meeting adjourned.”
