Chapter 2 - The Fantasy Crumbles

While quiet settled over my house, absolute anarchy was unleashed in the penthouse apartment on 5th Street.

I didn't need to be there to see it, though I heard every detail three days later from Miguel’s sister, Sofia, who called me in an absolute panic.

"Elena! What on earth did you do?!" Sofia screamed into the receiver the moment I answered. "Miguel called me crying! He says Chloe locked herself in the master bedroom and is packing her bags, Mom is screaming because nobody gave her heart medication on time, and the entire apartment smells like dirty diapers!"

I took a slow sip of my morning tea, standing on my back porch in a clean silk robe I hadn't worn in years.

"Sofia," I said calmly. "Good morning to you too."

"Don't 'good morning' me!" Sofia raged. "How could you dump a paralyzed woman in the middle of their apartment like a piece of unwanted luggage? She’s your mother-in-law!"

"Correction," I corrected smoothly. "She is your mother. And his mother. For seven years, 2,555 days, she was my full-time responsibility while you lived two hours away and visited once every three months with a box of cheap bakery cookies. If you are concerned about her, Sofia, I suggest you grab your car keys and go help your brother."

Sofia choked on her rage. "I have a job! I have children!"

"And I had a life," I replied. "Until all of you decided my time was worthless. Goodbye, Sofia."

I hung up before she could respond, blocking her number as well.

In reality, the scene at Chloe’s apartment was far worse than Sofia knew.

Chloe was a thirty-two-year-old marketing assistant who had entered an affair with Miguel under the impression that he was a wealthy, misunderstood executive stuck in a loveless marriage with a cold, nagging wife. She had envisioned romantic weekends, late-night dinners, and spontaneous trips to the coast.

She had not envisioned a seventy-two-year-old paralyzed woman occupying her white leather designer couch.

The first disaster struck at 6:00 PM on the very day I dropped Carmen off.

Carmen, who had spent the entire car ride believing she was simply visiting her son for a nice afternoon tea, finally realized the truth when she saw her medical bags piled on the kitchen island and overheard Chloe screaming in the bathroom.

"Miguel!" Carmen’s slurred, harsh voice echoed through the apartment. "Miguel, where is Elena?! Why is my leg cold? Where is my dinner?!"

Miguel, who had never changed a adult diaper in his life, stood in the center of the living room holding a tube of barrier cream as if it were an unexploded grenade.

"Mom, calm down," Miguel stammered, his face pale with sweat. "Elena... Elena had to go. She’s... she’s taking a break."

"A break?!" Carmen’s face contorted in anger. She was a proud, difficult woman who had spent years manipulating her son, but she was not stupid. She looked at Chloe, who had emerged from the bedroom wearing silk loungewear, her arms crossed, glaring at the wheelchair with absolute disgust. "Who is this girl? Miguel, where is my bed? My back hurts! Get Elena on the phone right now!"

"She blocked my number, Mom!" Miguel snapped, his patience snapping for the first time. "She blocked me! Okay?!"

"Then go bring her back!" Carmen yelled, her slurred speech thickening with rage. "I need my evening shot! I need to be lifted! You don't know how to do it! You'll drop me!"

Chloe stepped forward, her voice dripping with venom. "Miguel, if that woman isn't out of my apartment by tomorrow morning, I am calling the landlord and having all of you thrown out. This isn't a nursing home! I didn't sign up to play nursemaid to your paralyzed mother!"

Carmen stared at Chloe, her mouth open in shock.

For seven years, Carmen had treated me like an invasive species in her son’s life. She had criticized my cooking, told her relatives I was lazy whenever I took an hour to myself, and constantly reminded me that Miguel deserved a woman from a "better family."

Now, sitting in her own waste, watching her beloved son cringe away from her needs while his mistress spoke about her like a piece of diseased meat, the reality hit Carmen like an iron fist.

Miguel tried to turn his mother. He grabbed her under the arms, ignorant of the specific technique I had spent weeks learning from physical therapists. He pulled awkwardly. Carmen shrieked in pain as her shoulder twisted against the leather cushion.

"Ow! You idiot! You're hurting me!" Carmen hit his chest with her functional left fist. "Elena never hurt me! Elena knows how to hold me!"

"Well, Elena isn't here!" Miguel yelled, dropping his mother back onto the couch with a heavy thud. He threw the tube of cream against the wall, leaving a greasy white smear against the pristine paint. "Elena walked out on us! Do you hear me? She dumped you here and left!"

In that moment, sitting in the luxurious apartment that smelled of expensive perfume and cheap panic, Carmen looked at her son’s flushed, angry face.

She saw the laziness. She saw the incompetence. She saw the absolute lack of love.

And for the first time in seven years, Carmen realized that the only person who had ever truly protected her dignity was the woman she had spent seven years trying to tear down.
