Chapter 2 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF RAINERThe black-and-white police cruisers rolled up the long, manicured gravel drive of the Rainer estate at precisely 6:00 PM. The sprawling colonial-style mansion stood like a monument to old-money arrogance, its towering white pillars gleaming under the fading evening light.

Inside the grand parlor, Ethan Rainer was pouring a glass of scotch while Beatrice sat by the fireplace, knitting a small woolen blanket with an expression of cold, unbothered detachment. They had spent the entire afternoon discussing how they would handle Claire when she inevitably returned from the hospital—whether they should claim she had suffered a psychotic break or simply confine her to the guest house until the pregnancy was over.

The heavy oak front door didn't just knock; it shuddered under a heavy, authorized breach.

Ethan frowned, setting his glass down on the mahogany side table. "What in the world—"

Before he could finish his sentence, the parlor doors swung wide open. Three uniformed police officers stepped into the room, flanked by two detectives in plainclothes. Leading the group was Detective Miller, a veteran investigator whose eyes swept the room with calculated precision.

"Ethan Rainer? Beatrice Rainer?" Detective Miller’s voice echoed off the high ceilings. "You are both under arrest for domestic assault, aggravated battery, and unlawful imprisonment."

Ethan stared at them, his face draining of color before a surge of indignant fury flushed his cheeks. He stood up to his full height, smoothing the lapels of his designer sweater. "Are you out of your mind? Do you have any idea who you're talking to? My family built this county's infrastructure! I want your badge, officer—"

"Your family’s money doesn't buy immunity from felony charges, Mr. Rainer," Detective Miller interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs around Ethan’s wrists with practiced efficiency. "Especially not when we have high-definition audio and physical forensic proof."

Beatrice stood up from her chair, her knitting needles clattering to the floor. Her face remained rigid, though a flicker of genuine panic crossed her eyes. "This is an outrageous fabrication! Where is my daughter-in-law? She’s unstable! She fell down the stairs!"

"She didn't fall down the stairs, Mrs. Rainer," Detective Miller said, gesturing to a second officer who stepped forward to secure Beatrice’s wrists as well. "She was on a wooden bench in your courtyard while you coached your son on how to torture a pregnant woman. And thanks to a dashcam parked outside your gate, a jury is going to hear every single word of it."

As Ethan and Beatrice were led out through the grand double doors in handcuffs, flashbulbs suddenly flared in the twilight. Local reporters, tipped off by an anonymous source at the precinct, had converged on the estate. Ethan tried to shield his face with his cuffed hands, his pristine reputation shattering into a million pieces before the cameras—a stark, beautiful mirror image of the humiliation Claire had endured in the silence of that courtyard.
