Chapter 6 - The Legacy of LoveSix months later, the dust had finally settled. The siblings had moved on, scattered by their own greed and the collapse of their social standing in the town.

I took the proceeds from the land and opened a hospice center—a place where no one would ever have to die alone or be abandoned in their final days. I named it the Bill Foundation.
It was a sunny morning, the kind of day that made the world feel new again. I walked into the garden of the new facility, the sunlight filtering through the trees. I felt a peace I hadn't known for years.
A young woman, a volunteer at the center, walked up to me. She was holding a tray of bandages and medicine. "Althea, the new resident in room four needs help. He’s scared. He says he doesn't have anyone left."
I smiled, taking the tray from her. "Then he’s exactly where he needs to be."
I walked toward the room, my heart light. I realized then that Bill’s final gift hadn't been the money or the land. It had been the opportunity to turn my years of silent service into a lifetime of compassion.
I had been abandoned by a family that didn't know how to love, but I had gained a family of people who needed me. I sat down beside the new resident, took his hand in mine, and whispered the same words I had said to Bill a thousand times.
