Chapter 4 - The Counter-Offensive at the Sterling EstateBy Wednesday evening, the news of Lawrence Mercer’s arrest and the corporate scandal at Sterling-Mercer Holdings had hit the financial columns of the Indianapolis Star and the digital feeds of regional business journals.

When I drove my black sedan—reclaimed from the police impound lot with only a minor dent on the front bumper—back through the wrought-iron gates of our suburban estate, the media vans were already parked along the curb, flashing camera lenses like a swarm of mechanical fireflies.

I didn't stop for interviews. I pressed the automatic gate opener, drove up the circular driveway, and parked in the double garage.

Inside the house, the atmosphere was chaotic.

Cordelia Mercer was standing in the center of the grand foyer, surrounded by packing boxes, screaming furiously into her smartphone while a moving company representative shook his head in exasperation.

When the front door opened and I walked in, carrying my briefcase and wearing an immaculate camel-hair coat, Cordelia dropped her phone onto the marble floor.

“You!” Cordelia shrieked, marching toward me with her finger raised like a weapon. “This is all your fault! You orchestrated this entire conspiracy! You trapped my son! You ruined his career out of spite and jealousy!”

I didn't blink. I stood my ground, letting my gaze sweep over the packed cardboard boxes stacked near the door.

“Hello, Cordelia,” I said coolly, stepping past her toward the kitchen. “I see you’ve already started packing. That saves me the trouble of filing a formal eviction notice.”

“Eviction?!” Cordelia’s voice cracked with hysterical disbelief. “I am a Mercer! This is my son’s home! You can't throw me out on the street!”

“Actually, Cordelia, I can,” I replied, turning around to face her, pulling a notarized legal document from my briefcase. “As of 2:00 PM today, the family trust holding the title to this estate has been completely restructured. Since Lawrence used corporate funds embezzled from my family’s venture capital accounts to pay off the remaining mortgage principal last year, the courts have granted an emergency restitution lien transferring one hundred percent of the property equity to my sole ownership.”

Cordelia staggered backward, her hand flying to her chest. “That’s... that’s illegal! My son paid for this house!”

“Your son couldn't afford the landscaping bills without my signature,” I corrected sharply. “Now, you have exactly two hours to remove your personal belongings from the guest suite before the local sheriff’s deputies arrive to supervise the property handover. Any furniture, jewelry, or cash purchased with embezzled corporate funds remains on site as forensic evidence.”

Before Cordelia could unleash another torrent of aristocratic abuse, the front doorbell rang sharply.

I walked over, unlocked the heavy oak door, and pulled it open.

Standing on the porch was a process server holding a thick sheaf of legal papers, flanked by two uniformed county deputies.

“Mrs. Fiona Mercer?” the server asked.

“Yes.”

“You’ve been formally served with counter-notice filings from Paige Dunlap’s legal counsel regarding civil liability for vehicle entrustment and medical damages resulting from the collision.”

I took the envelope, examined the header, and let out a calm, unbothered breath.

“Tell Ms. Dunlap’s counsel,” I told the server with a slight smile, “that my legal team looks forward to cross-examining her regarding unauthorized vehicle theft, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny in civil court next Tuesday morning. I’m sure her newborn will appreciate visiting her mother in civil holding.”

The process server blinked, clearly taken aback by my composure, before nodding and walking back down the steps.

I turned back to look at Cordelia, who was now quietly, frantically throwing her designer perfume bottles into a cardboard box with trembling hands. The invincible fortress of the Mercer family had crumbled into dust, leaving behind only the cold, unyielding reality of accountability.
