But my life was no longer defined solely by twelve-hour workdays and red-eye flights. I had bought a beautiful, mid-century modern home nestled in the hills of West Lake Hills—a place with vast glass walls, a private cedar deck overlooking the greenbelt, and no locks that I didn't control myself.
One warm April evening, I stood on the deck, watching the fireflies begin to dance over the canyon below.
Beside me stood Dr. Julian Pierce—a brilliant senior researcher in artificial intelligence whom Apex Digital had recruited from Stanford to lead our new predictive modeling division. Over the last six months, Julian had become much more than a business partner. He was a man whose intellect was matched only by his quiet, steady gentleness—a man who saw my drive and my success not as an emasculating challenge, but as a quality he wanted to walk beside.
Julian handed me a glass of crisp white wine, his fingers brushing against mine—warm, steady, and entirely safe.
"The server integration is complete, Melissa," Julian said, his eyes reflecting the soft, golden light of the sunset. "The predictive models are running at ninety-eight percent efficiency. We’ve officially eliminated the logistics bottleneck in the southern corridor."
"The bottleneck was always a structural issue, Julian," I smiled, leaning my shoulder against his. "Once you fix the flow, the system manages itself."
