Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the Empire

The handcuffs clicked loudly in the silent courtroom.

"Get your hands off me!" Beatriz shrieked as two female officers seized her arms, pulling her mink coat off her shoulders. "Do you know who I am?! My late husband was a judge! You can't touch me! Rodrigo, do something!"

Rodrigo was hyperventilating, his hands pinned behind his back as heavy steel cuffs locked around his wrists. "Mariana! Please! Mariana, listen to me!" he sobbed, tears spilling frantically over his cheeks. "I was under so much stress! The debt... the creditors threatened my life! My mother forced me to do it! It was all her idea!"

"You cowardly dog!" Beatriz screamed, turning on her son with venomous fury. "I did everything for you! I built your company! You’re the one who pushed her!"

"Silence both of them!" Commander Vargas commanded.

As the officers dragged Rodrigo and Beatriz toward the rear holding cells, Rodrigo dropped to his knees, scraping his expensive suit trousers against the hard floor, staring up at Mariana with desperate, bloodshot eyes.

"Mariana! Please! Think of Camila! She needs a father!"

Mariana stood up slowly. She walked over to the barrier separating the gallery from the counsel tables, stopping just two feet from where Rodrigo was being hauled up by the officers.

She reached up, slowly unwrapping the silk scarf from around her neck, exposing the deep, jagged red-and-purple skin grafts covering her throat and upper chest.

"Camila has a mother," Mariana said, her voice dropping into a cold, unbreakable whisper. "A mother who survived you. You will never see her face again."

Rodrigo let out a choked wail as the officers yanked him through the heavy iron doors, slamming them shut behind him.

In the hours following the arrest, the legal dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

Federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants on Alcázar Holdings headquarters, Rodrigo’s private penthouse in Santa Fe, and Beatriz’s luxury estate in Pedregal.

What they uncovered was a massive, decades-long financial syndicate. Rodrigo had not merely embezzled twelve million pesos; he had operated a fraudulent Ponzi scheme targeting wealthy elderly investors across Mexico City, using shell corporations in Panama and the Cayman Islands to launder over eighty million pesos.

Beatriz, far from being a passive bystander, was revealed to be the primary accountant and mastermind behind the offshore banking network.

Within forty-eight hours, the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT) froze every bank account, property, vehicle, and investment fund associated with the Alcázar family.

The bank that held the fraudulent twelve-million-peso lien on Mariana’s Coyoacán house immediately dropped all claims, issuing a formal public apology to Mariana and firing their senior loan officer for gross negligence and corruption.

The Coyoacán property was restored entirely to Mariana’s name, completely free of debt or encumbrance.
